I don't feel that the lens flare does anything for the image -- the himan eye is more preceptive and would still be able to see some depth in the shadow areas.

Sorry, to me it just looks like parts are really overexposed and other parts are really underexposed.

You needed the sun in a different spot and a neutral density filter of some sort. Sun and waterfalls do not mix.
