Is a flash such as the Canon 430ez compatible on a Canon EOS Digital Camera. I am worried about getting the wrong voltage, and cannot find anything about the voltage amount for these flashes. If you have any information regarding these flashes I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you.

totally compatible no need to worry!

Voltage is compatible, so that won't be an issue. The flash will only work in manual mode though. The A-TTL is not compatible with the E-TTL of your camera. (It will still fire if you have it in TTL mode, but the flash exposure won't necessarily be correct.) I've got a couple of 430EZ's that I use from time to time.

My understanding was that EZ flashes are not dSLR eTTL compatible!
I just found this on http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#faq4"2I have an old flash unit. Will it work on my new Canon digital EOS camera? Maybe. That depends on what type of flash unit you have. Canon digital cameras can only communicate with Canon Speedlite flash models with names ending in EX. If your Canon flash unit has a model name which ends with E or EZ or anything else then its automated features will not work with a Canon digital EOS camera. As for flash units manufactured by other makers, check its specifications to see if it supports “E-TTL flash metering.” If it does not, or only lists “Canon TTL flash metering” then it most likely will not work. For details see the section on flash metering with digital cameras.

You're right. They're not E-TTL compatible but they are compatible, except only in manual mode.

And that's not a problem as long as you have proper manual controls, unlike what the 430ez offers. :)

I take it you just don't know what you talking about... but why doesn't the 430EZ have proper manual controls?

The 430EZ does have full manual controls. I used one with my 10D for quite a while.

It retains all auto functions except it will not do E-TTL.

1) It will auto zoom the flash head to match your lens focal length.
2) It will show your flash coupling distance for the power, ISO, and aperture you set,
3) Will display aperture selected on your camera
4) Will display ISO selected on your camera

Well for some reason my 540ez only works in full power mode even when I set it to manual mode and say 1/16 power on my 1dmk2.

Now on my 10d, it works fine in manual mode. So don't know what is going on.

Could just be something as simple as the 1D2's contacts but that's the extent of my knowledge

I've got a 540EZ myself and it fires true in manual mode (1/16th etc etc), it only consistently fires 1/1 if I go into 'A-TTL' mode, which doesnt work with eos digital.

Could be a contact issue I suppose, as moose said
