I've been writing web based applications for my employer for years. I've got a pretty good handle on JavaScript, CSS, html, image editing, user experience, etc. etc. etc. I am new to photography. I'm also new to writing websites for external clients. I'm now interested in jumping in, and I have a client interested in a rewrite of her site, including new images of herself as well as her partners. It is a professional office (dental). There is much room for improvement for the site, which is approximately 7 pages of very static content (which I may separate from the presentation).

So, before I knew that one of the partners was gone, and they hated the current images, I had an idea of price for the website work. With the opportunity to do the photography as well, I'm not sure what to quote.

Suggestions on price for each part? I'm guessing at about 40 hours work total (you know how that goes though).

thanks.

Best way is to break down the site into chunks.

Planning
Design
Template Development
Application Development (if applicable)
Testing
Content/Copy editing
Photography

Then, figure out how many hours you will need to cover each of those items. Take that times your hourly rate and that will give you a pretty good idea of what the project will cost.

Keep in mind that this is heavily dependent on how well you estimate the time involved. This gets better with experience, but you may want to error on the safe side, especially for areas that are not your strongest points (design for instance, or application development, etc..)

Locking the client in comes from how well you specify each step and what is expected on both parties to complete each step.

Thanks Todd, I have a pretty good idea about all but the photography part. They will know that I'm not a pro when it comes to the photography, but the prior person took 5 hours, and it was way too formal for them (guess he told them to dress up, and be stiff?). So I know it will take some time, but the pressure for studio look and feel is gone. I've built a preliminary prototype in photoshop for a demo, and will only need to gather any new requirements (she mentioned optimizing for search engines, which is not currently being done). If you were to take half a day for photos, and you had no "name" in the community, what would your time be worth? $200.00 too much for that part? I'll likely package the thing, rewrite, photography, and a year of maintenance / updates for one price - the hope being that they get used to calling me, and I can keep the account.

;) thanks for taking the time to type that one out (or find / replace) - and I'm passing on the opportunity to use flash. I'll likely keep the content and the presentation together since it is such a small site, and easy to update if needed.

LOL... sorry, that post is epic.

Anyways, I think $200 is too cheap. If they hired a full-time pro it would cost them a considerable amount of money for a full day of shooting.

I would take your development hourly rate and double or triple it. So, if you're charing $40 hr, I'd charge 6 hours at $120hr for the photo shoot.

Got to remember that there is more than just the actual shooting involved, you have to get there, setup, shoot, then get back, then process and deliver all of the photos.

If you're looking for an ongoing thing, then you can make the decision to cut them a break on some things with the hopes of more revenue down the road. Just be careful doing this, a lot of times this backfires and you end up getting hosed on the deal (I know, I've done it too many times)

200 was the total photography part - so 120 per hour is beyond what I was thinking, but very important to consider. thank you very much for the feedback.

It's interesting how quickly you can read it once you start.

It's interesting how quickly you can read it once you start. Keep in mind that this is an international forum & English isn't everyones first language?
And let's not forget the "don't be a jerk" language (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=50442) section of the forum rules, so I've deleted that post. There are better ways to exercise ones creativity here, & that isn't one of them.

Oh, o.k. I guess I started things with my thread title. sorry folks. Thanks for all the great information. I'm going to meet with the potential clients soon, and discuss the plans for the rewrite of the site. Keep your fingers crossed for me that I get the gig - I need a starting point. Once I get that under my belt, I'll write my own site, and put the rewritten in as a client, and I'm off! Oh, and once I have all that, I'll put it up in here for consideration / comments / criticism.
