I am currently looking into a Powerbook G4. Primarily, this computer will be used for photography and digital imaging. Does anyone have any other suggestions, maybe on software or other systems. Also, can anyone provide any comments on the G4 that might help shape my decision. Thanks

Just get as much RAM as you can afford and the biggest HD. Wireless is good, too. Get an extra battery pack or two. A super-drive will let you burn to a DVD for backup, otherwise a combo drive will let you read DVDs but only burn to CDs.
This all pretty much applies no matter what kind of laptop you end up getting. I have a personal bias in favor of Apple, but that's just my opinion.

I have a G3 I book and I'm getting ready to upgrade in the near future, but I was told that the video memory was important for programs like PS., so I was leaning toward the powerbooks with 128mg of video memory, VS 32 or 64 of the I books. If I'm wrong on this point, someone please let us know, so we are both not mistaken.

I have a question regarding Ram. I installed a little utility that can, among other things, measure the ram used. No matter how intensive I use the laptop the ram used rarely goes above say 400 (out of 512). So do you think adding more memory will improve performance.
Thanks.

The more RAM you install, the more "virtual memory" Photoshop will create on your harddrive, so you might want to replace the harddrive with a faster one. I have 1 GB ram now in my PowerBook G4 (old 1 GHz model) and it's just on the edge of being painful. So I'm looking forward to a new model soon, where I can add more RAM.

A Powerbook G4? I assume you're getting this used, then? (The current Powerbooks have the G5 processors in them.)
As others have already said, make sure you have as much RAM as you can afford. What the laptop comes with new usually is never enough. Also, if you can swing it, get an external monitor to do your photo editing on when working at the desktop.

Ahem.... NO... the current PowerBooks *and* iBooks both thave G4's in them. No G5 in any portable Macintosh at the moment. All Mac users are waiting for Steve Jobs to say "one more thing" on the next MW Expo (this summer I believe) and present the PowerBook G5. However, it might have to wait since they do have problems with cooling, so we might see the next fast PowerBook with Intel inside.
