I recently posted this image and got some nice comments so i sent it to a local evening paper who printed it!

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.speed/Forums%20Pictures/Tripcol.jpg

It looked great in print and last week someone even wrote to the paper to pass comment. I really value comments from you guys on here but for someone to write and post a letter, well i think thats just great and i am so chuffed!!
I feel a little guilty as the guy seems to think it was taken on film but im afraid PS was used a touch!!!

First of all, congrats. Second of all, I believe the use of the word "film" in the writer's letter was probably intended in the proverbial sense - that is, to suggest that a camera (whether film or digital) was utilized as the artist's canvas.

Finally, that is a beautiful photo, regardless of any manipulations in PS.

Gorgeous shot, and I agree with MTalley in his assessment that the term "film" is used to describe a particular genre of art, similar to the term "canvas" when there are many different sorts of canvas and indeed mediums to paint on, and needs no correction and no guilt.

Well done!

Congrats! That must be a real buzz! :)

I went to that pub a couple of years ago when we were doing some work in Nottingham town centre. We sat in a bit which looked like it had been carved out of solid rock, very cool.

Congratulations Jon
I think the photo is absolutely beautiful
love it

the newspapers are glad to receive shots, if they are suitable

were you paid for it ? I know it's not everything (re money)
but I find they will publish pics. , topical or otherwise suitable and interesting, if we give it for nothing ,which they want , saying they have their own photographers.
but then you get the guys (magazines are good for that) who want to pay
and that makes it really worthwhile . it gives the pictures and you a lot more respect also.
it's not really all about the $$ end of things..... but the respect all 'round

not talking about you or other shooters but they (editors) need to know it's not just a 'snap' taken lightly and we that are so glad to get published that we will do anything to see it in print.

it takes experience , sometimes patience and a lot of expence to get that far , to have a picture which gives a bit of uumph, enough to attract their's and their reader's interest.

after all is said and done, their business is to sell the papers
they have to fill them
we are doing them a favour at the end of the day

I love your shot.
I love to see the pictures in the newspapers or magazines.

keep the copyright of any of your pictures.
not to be used at the editor's whim for anything else

now they got a letter from a reader saying how your picture was liked, he/she (editor) will be even more interested next time you come along with something

you said it looked really good in print
that's great
the quality of the paper in some (local) newspapers is not so good and photographs they publish don't look good in print at all
so even though they would publish pictures I don't fancy seeing that quality showing in any kind of print which I maybe would have been thinking of giving them
I rather leave it altogether then see it badly done.
but we can't always know how the finished shot will end up as it is at the editor's discretion
we will have an idea eventually of what we want , what we will accept from what we see in the finished product , regards how it is displayed.
and move on if we want. the choices are ours.

congratulations again.
hope anything I said will not take away anything from the thrill even I got from seeing your picture and knowing it is appreciated like this

the gentleman who took the time to write in to the newspaper, to say about your shot , is to be admired.
lucky you saw the comments

Marie,

Thanks for a detailed post!! And only two smilies!!! Are you feeling well? lol

No i wasn't paid for the shot, it was featured in a section where anyone can submit photographs to promote themselves as long as they are decent and reflect a sense of the city. Sometimes i send them in just for the fun of it.

I was just great to see that someone had taken the time to write in, this never happens normally. I didn't even see the letter at first, someone cut it out and gave it me.

Congratulations, it is a great shot and it must have been brilliant to see it in print. And to get the letter writers comments is a real bonus. Well done.

not to be used at the editor's whim for anything else You might send them a note thanking them for running it, & gently remind them that it's not to be used for any other purposes?!

And only two smilies!!! Are you feeling well? lol :D:D:D
