Im new to Macro, i have a Rebel XT. What would be a good Macro lens for me? I found a Canon - 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens on Best Buy.com

What lenses do you currently have? There are cheaper ways to get into macro, namely reversing lenses and purchasing extension tubes.

The 100mm macro is nice if you can afford it, i have it and loved it. But when i took the jump to macro i bought extension tubes first and used a lense i have currently, i did this nowing if i like macro i would use it on my 100mm canon macro anyway so it wouldnt be a wast, but still the 150 on tubes is a easy leap and gives you a good feel if you like macro rather then the 450 used for the canon 100mm 2.8 macro.

Hi all, I'm also intrigued by macro photography. I bought a Canon XS 10mp bundle that came with a macro lens. I use it attached to the 18-55 lens but not sure if it really makes a difference in the final photo. Digital Concepts 0.45X

I think the 100mm f/2.8 is an excellent lens and well worth the money. I guess they have an IS version out now that is a bit more expensive, but I know I shoot most of my macro photos with a tripod, so it would be wasted money for me. Anyway, I find this lens to be one of my best for image quality, along with the wide aperture, I've actually used it on many occasions as just a normal telephoto lens.

So can you not shoot handheld with the older Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM? Does the image stabilizer on the newer version (that is about $300+ more expensive) really worth the extra money?

The best advice I can give you (http://nocroppingzone.blogspot.com/2009/11/i-don-know-what-you-need.html). In short and IMHO I think that due to the weight, image quality, and size the EF-S 60mm is the better lens for a beginner.

Hmmm...food for thought Dalantech ~ and a little less expensive for a beginner as well.
