I have a 488 head that I would like to convert to the 488CR2. I can remove the top plate on the 488 and it looks like the 488CR2 plate should attach the same way. Does anyone know if you can order the top plate only for the 488CR2?

Not sure, but you may also be able to buy a used plate from somebody who replaced their RC2 with something like an arca-swiss.

I believe this Manfrotto 323 RC2 adapter kit (http://www.bogenimaging.us/Jahia/site/bius/pid/6780?kindOfProductCollectionRequest=productDetail&productCode=323&productDescription=QUICK%20CHANGE%20RECT.PLATE%20A DAPTR&curBrandId=MAN&market=MKT1&product_from_search=true) would work for you. Assuming that if you take the top plate off the 488 head and have a 3/8-16 stud left, it will work.

This will work for you, the adapter comes with a stud adapter if I remember correctly. I have one of these on my Joby Gorillapod.

Thanks for the info. I think that the stud underneath is the standard 3/8-16

Looking at these diagrams, it really appears to me that the posts are different between the two heads. I know the post of the 488RC2 is one piece because I converted mine to the Arca-Swiss configuration.

If you compare the part numbers you'll see everything from the body down is the same for both heads, but the part numbers from the ball up are different. My guess is that you can't attach the clamp and plate from the 488RC2 to the 488.

If that adapter does come with a ¼ X 20 bushing, then it might work.

Thanks for the schematics! I'll go by the store this weekend and see what fits.

A pity you are in Texas, because I've got an RC2 clamp with two plates I cannot sell. The transport costs kill it stone dead.

Arca compatible QR systems are far-far superior to the RC-2 system. Kirk has an Arca compatible clamp which will fit on the 488 head. Arca stuff costs a bit more but, is well worth it. Especially good are the L-plates from really Right Stuff which can be used with any Arca compatible QR system.
