I just ordered the Canon 300mm f2.8 IS L USM but didn't see anything about the size of the front filter diameter. I have put a UV filter on every lens I've ever owned before ... saved several of them ... so I need to know what the SOP is for this lens. Thanks.

the front element is too large for a conventional screw-on filter. lenses this size uses a drop-in filter behind the rear element instead.
if i remember correctly the front element of this lens is more for protection and can be (relatively) cheaply replaced if damaged.

Yes, I meant on front of lens for protection, not for color correction or polarization. I guess when you pay almost $4000 for a lens they expect you to take better care of it! :-)

The hoods aree so deep on these telephotos that one would require a very long object to get to the lens to damage it...
ie: ALLWAYS mount the lens hood ;)

It's exactly what CDS said... hood on 300/2.8 is completely different beast then so called hoods on 70-200 or something :) If you use hood on 300/2.8 there's no way you can scratch front glass of lens... unless you intentionaly stick something there :)
