OK, I looked around the forums and theres a few reccomendations but nothing solid. I need a good heavy duty stand with boom for 22'' beauty dish. Also, I have an old stand but It appears I cant get a large foldable softbox to tilt at all. Is there anything I'm missing there? Or do I need a new stand for that too?

Thanks!

The Manfrotto 085BS (http://www.bogenimaging.us/Jahia/site/bius/pid/6780?kindOfProductCollectionRequest=productDetail&productCode=085BS&productDescription=Heavy%20Duty%20Black%20Light%20 Boom,%20Incl.008BU%20Stand%20w/Casters&curBrandId=MAN&market=MKT3&product_from_search=true) is my solid recommendation for a boom/stand kit. I use a slightly older version and find it to be an ideal package.

thanks Skip, probably should have mentioned it'll be for use for on location shooting.

thanks Skip, probably should have mentioned it'll be for use for on location shooting.I carry my complete boom/stand rig (except for the 15-lb counterweight) in one location bag - about 8"x8"X48". Lighting equipment is transported in another case. I can normally set the boom rig up in just a couple of minutes.

Is this boom aluminium or steel? I cannot find that in the descriptions. Thanks. The Manfrotto 085BS uses a set of three 3-foot long 35mm (outside diameter) aluminum tubes which have a .050" wall thickness. The tube sections have machined solid aluminum couplers to connect them.

The pivoting clamp appears to be made of cast aluminum.

The tubes that make up the stand are steel.

The 15-lb counterweight appears to be made of cast iron.

Since the Alienbees group no longer carries the boom they used to sell, lots of folks are going to be interested.

Could you please shoot and post a couple close-up photos (a couple different views) of the pivoting clamp that's part of the 420B package? None of the photos I've been able to find show it in any detail.

Thanks.

Yeah, that's why I jumped on one without hesitation when Amazon had it listed for around $150.

Now, before anybody gets excited, I should mention that this was earlier this year in Spring. They must have discovered their clerical error after they processed (and shipped) my order because the price was changed to something more in line with what B&H was selling it for.

yeah i can do that tomorrow (maybe) i might take it back. just seen i overpaid about $30.00 for it. not happy. thankfully i didnt pull it out of the box yet. im going in screaming tomorrow. i can tell you this, from the floor model they had up its not very sturdy. any downward pressure on the boom even with the pivoting clamp locked tight it would slowly start to go downward. possibly some safety feature so you know as soon as you try to put weight on it if its too much. ill post back here tomorrow and let you know the outcome of my return. if he hands me $30.00 ill keep it, if not im returning it and never shopping there again.

i can tell you this, from the floor model they had up its not very sturdy. any downward pressure on the boom even with the pivoting clamp locked tight it would slowly start to go downward. You have to remember that ANY boom, when properly set up, will be balanced. That means that the counterweight at the non-working end of the boom should precisely offset the weight of the load on the working end of the boom.

When I loosen the clamp on my boom, I can adjust the angle of the boom with the lightest touch of a finger and then I tighten the clamp again.

I gather that the main screw handle loosens both the clamping of the boom as well as the angle position. Is that correct?

What's the brass-colored pin with the handle all about?

HastyPhoto

brass pin is just a safety latch that really doesnt do a whole lot imo. and yes you are correct.

The manfrotto 420 that you have pictured is a great convertible boom stand thats light and portable for location. Albeit I have smaller heads not monolights but it holds my 22" beauty dish very nicely - I bought the version with the sandbag counterweight and always use it as well as another on the base. You do need to tighten up the lever very snugly but there should be no creep once you do that.
