As promised, Oulton Park on Saturday. This meeting comprised the K&N saloons (bonkers collection of high powered tin), post historic and classic touring cars, among other things. Weather was about spot on, dry and mainly cloudy.
Now this is the drool section.
8 litre Viper anyone?

No, how about a 6.7 litre Sierra?

OK, settle for a 5.2 litre Darrion (it won anyway).

Old touring cars just never die.
MK-I Escort 2000 (I like this shot for some reason, new spot).

One for the Lotus lovers.

And finally, one for our American cousins - I know what it is, do you?

I have an assignment this weekend to cover the NW Formula Ford championship, so as ususal, watch this space.

Very cool as always Kenny. Can I take a guess at the last one? Chevy Camaro SS350? Nice.

The orange RS Escort shot is particularly clear! Great glass... or great panning? Top result.

C'mon Ken, you need to post instructions for cleaning the drool off the monitor. :-)

I'm not a Viper fan, but that thing looked just superb and well turned out. It didn't run in the afternoon's race as it was 20db over the sound level limit. As most UK circuits have residential areas surrounding them the control over noise has to be very strict. Shame, as I would have liked to see how it stood up against the Darrion. Never mind, it will be back for the Britcar meeting in August with hopefully better silencers. In the meantime, I have some of the very few pictures taken of it in action.
The Escorts are just mental. No concept that they are getting on in years, just flat out high-speed drifts through corners and foot to the floor everywhere else. Takes me back.....

I missed the Britcars @ Brands in April - I went on the Sunday expecting them to be there and apparently it was the day before.
Schoolboy error anyone? :D muppet!

Mmmmm Viper. Very nice.
Ken - you don't seem to post many "90-degree" pans (if you see what I mean)... is there a particular reason for this?

The concept of silencers on race cars is outrageous.Happening here too. People should not build residential areas near race tracks or farms.

Brands Hatch is a prime example. All the old duffers that live behind it moan about the GP circuit being used.
Err, hello? You moved there. It was there before you! You didn't think it might be noisy?!
Just like the people who complain about the noise from Heathrow, yet they chose to move there.
Bah.

I don't like them and neither do the mags. I always take some for sponsors so they can see the logos, but after you take one they all look the same. Just my style I'm afraid and market demand, you either like it or don't. Plus, you miss a huge amount of action and car dynamics with pan shots.

I LOVE the shot of the Europa!

As usual, Ken, ALL your images are something for us to drool about

The Camaro is circa 1968? or close to it.

Well done shots. I've been wondering why all the headlights have tapes x's over them. Mind filling me in?

I'm not 100% sure, but typically they tape "real" glass headlights so that they will hold together and not dissipate glass all over the place if they break. It is designed to keep the track from getting littered by glass fragments in case of an accident etc. The newer lights are made out of a safety type of glass like your cars front window, and will not shatter to pieces if broken.

Nice shots as usual Ken. Got to admit that I'm stumped with trying to identify the last car in your post. Any more clues?
Cheers,
Simon.

AH--a Europa :) 32 years ago a young girl was at a race track in Wisconsin admiring a Lotus Europa when the owner asked her if she would like to sit in it. We've been married 28+ years now.

That's what I thought. I have to admit my shooting style has evolved since joinging this forum, which is no doubt due to your influence (amongst others). But I still like the odd pan. ;)

So do some of the punters... I flogged a couple this week ;) Can't say I like them much myself though. As Ken said, I find them fairly boring to look at and shoot.
Oh, I'm with Nick on the car BTW... A Camaro SS 350. That very one was running at the CSMA Classic Festival earlier in the year.

I take a few pan shots with the 1D MK-I and 70-200 when asked to do so by a driver or sponsor, but the best pan shot locations are not the same as the head-on shots, which makes a mess of my shooting schedule. Not all cars lend themselves to a good looking pan shot. I remember taking one a while back and zoomed in the detail was so good you could clearly see the bolt heads on the AP racing calipers. The car itself was a boring Fiesta, but the driver was delighted as it showed the sponsor's logo in fantastic detail. Ah well, whatever suits.
Oddly enough, a Camaro holds the lap record in that class.
Here are a couple from the days when I would turn up for touring car meetings at 6am to get the best view:

These little beggars think they are big cars and give it everything (taken at 600mm)

And yes, that is a Moggy in the back of that shot.

Yenko Camaro? Nice shots, as per usual. Brands Hatch is a prime example. All the old duffers that live behind it moan about the GP circuit being used.
Err, hello? You moved there. It was there before you! You didn't think it might be noisy?! We have the same thing at my old track - going on 45 years now. Then they'd sit in lawn chairs on the roof of their houses. So we put up a fence! Mufflers & noise restrictions. No engines except 10 - 6PM
they tape "real" glass headlights so that they will hold together and not dissipate glass all over the place if they break. Mad has it right. Man, does that go back a long way! ;)

Gavin, that was shot dead level (look at the brickwork) and that's how the track both leans and drops. I have gone grass cutting there myself in my racing days. It is probably one of the classic Outlon Park shots and to get it right you need to hear them coming and be spot on with your timing as they crest the rise. I have to admit, I love working at that spot
Coatsie, that was shot just before Old Hall at the end of the start/finish line. It is actually a bit of a dodgy spot to work from. There is a debris fence behind the Armco and I was working in the gap between of less than 3ft, or put another way - no escape route at all. If anything had hit the barrier with force I would have been meat in a metal sandwich. You catch them just as they are hitting the brakes and starting to turn in, not everyone getting it right as the tracks in the grass prove.
I'll close off my posting in this thread with this one of Peter Harper proving that you can overtake on the outside at Lodge. He went on to win the race.
