OK. I see what you mean. The front element glides back and forth a little. My IQ is back to normal. What kind of HOYA filter are you using? I just ordered a PRO 1 HMC HOYA Filter today and I hope I don't experience the same problem.

I've never heard of a filter touching its front elephant.

Just checked mine; it just glides smoothly upto the filter and stops. Nowhere near touching the filter.

Mine is a Bower and it doesn't touch. I think it's the rear of the elephant you have to worry about though.

Nope. I do recall seeing another thread on this subject a few months ago - but the concensus was that it never actually touches. Mine certainly doesn't. I've got a Canon UV and a Hoya Pro 1 polariser. Perhaps it's because the elephant has bent your filter?

I noticed that the sound of the lens mechanism reaching the stop point at the ends of the zoom was different as soon as I put the filter on. It wasn't a big noise - just different with the filter on - which is BAD
No one else get that?

It is not touching the front elephant. If it were I belive the elephant would have to say something about it.
What is happening is the edge of the lens barrel is making contact with the back of the screw thread round the edges of the filter.

They climb up your pyjama leg after you've had a wee beverage, they're usually pink :D

Forget about the front and rear of the elephant, just dont step in what it leaves behind.

Probably not.
But it does no harm... and I would imagine in the long run would prevent wear on the zoom mech as it is not hitting the stops, instead stopping on the filter. I might be totally wrong though!!!!

that you might...Also it could cut maybe even 1mm off the 17 mm making it a 18mm
OH NO - one whole mm!
but seriously I just don't think it is right
