Night Photos

There is going to be a light show in the City over the weekend. I have looked over the Night Photos thread they is so much information given. I just wont to make sure I get it right.

I have a Canon 400d 75-300 & 18-55 & a tripod, what setting would the members recommend for taking good pictures.

f/8 is usually the sharpest aperture for any lens. It would be a good start, and then adjust in Manual for correct exposure.
