View Full Version : Need a name for dog photo business

I'm looking for potential names for a dog photography business. I have an unused registered domain of ryderphotography.ca available or I could register another domain with either .com and/or .ca extension.
Type of images can be seen on this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=779600)
Target are dog owners (later might expand to horses & other animals) that hold high regard for their canine companions, treat them like a family member, perhaps have more heart then cash and pamper them, though not necessarily being fanatical.
My business currently operates as Ryder Photography with my current site being at www.ryderphoto.ca with a site redesign is underway.
Since I want to specialize and develop the dog business I want to keep it separate from the rest, which some aspects will be discontinued over the next 6 to 12 months.
I should add that I do shoot some commercial & editorial dog work and was thinking of a name that can cater to "all things dog" and not be too cute as to alienate commercial clients.
So....got any name ideas?
Cheers

What can I say, I was a huge Annabella Lwin fan. She had more energy on stage than a box full of puppies.

You guys have some great names. Dennis I think you're onto something with k9. My husband tossed out K9 Imagery or K9 Images. It's not as endearing as I'd hope but the URl is available, it's short & descriptive, and has a good positioning with potential commercial & editorial clients.
I'm sleeping on a few names ;)
Thanks to everyone for all the name ideas.

Those photos are bloody excellent by the way, there's definitely a market for high quality pet portraits like that I reckon (but you obviously already know this!)

Wow, I can't even imagine a dog photography business. You are a brave person! I have to say that getting quality images of my dog is the hardest thing I have tried to photograph. My keeper ratio is most likely under 5%.
Anyway, I like:

I realize this is going to sound really boring, but Ontario Dog Photography (or the geographic equivalent that works for your market). The domain name is available and it is great SEO real estate to own.

I don't know much about business names, but there already is a K9 Images in Ontario. (or used to be)

Thank you very much! I think the many years I've spent with dogs owning, breeding & showing them helps me see the moments to capture.
I agree, amazing photos! :)
Thank you

Hehehe, I haven't looked at my keeper rate, but I'd guess it's over 50%.
You have some good names that may come to life ;) Love Lazy Dog!

Tim, anytime you have a suggestion and it relates to SEO I listen. You helped me previously and I still enjoy first position for many of my keyword searches on Google 2 years later with no updates, or added content to my outdated site!
I registered ontariodogphotography.ca & ontariodogphotography.com a couple of hours ago :)
I may select a more enticing name to market (still liking Lazy Dog) but then direct it to ontariodogphotography.com where I'll host the site. Will that still work?
How about: "Pupparazzi" ;)
There's a Puparazzi Photography in Ontario already.
Thanks to everyone's names - you guys sure are creative!

Yes the .com domain is registered to someone in Ontario but I haven't found indication that the business operates. Something that a business search could would show up, but I've chosen not to use it. Thanks!

Lindsey, you have the right idea. The name of the business is relevant to business cards and word of mouth and it will show up just fine when someone searches it online. The marketing angle is to get the lion's share of those who don't know the name "Lazy Dog" but who search for dog photography in your area.
In its own goofy way its no different than a business that would name itself AAA taxicab so they could be the first one listed in the yellow pages under taxicabs. The nice thing is the domain name doesn't have to be the same as your business name.... and you can still have a unique site for Lazy Dog if you want as long as it isn't a pure duplicate.
BTW I loved your first couple shots of pooches on the link you posted -- a real WOW effect. Spot on in terms of what folks who consider their dogs part of the family would really like. As always, you have a great marketing mind.

Thinking into the future... if/when dogs gets expanded to cats (did I just say that?) & horses, I'm thinking I should pick up Ontario Pet Photography also. I do love cats though not as easy, or enjoyable, for me to shoot ;)
I'm leaning towards a Bludomain flash template hosted where my current site is (not with Bludomain). I see much improved SEO capability such as:
flash indexing for improved search-engine friendliness
ability to access each section directly with a separate url address
ability to enter separate meta title for each main menu button and each text section
ability to add custom meta tags (besides the standard title, keywords, and description)
My old site is html, do you think these features will do a good job for SEO?
I'm so pumped about a doggie business. When I say "I love dogs", it is a total under statement - lol

I don't really know. I'm a little behind the times in terms of efforts to make flash SEO friendly. I can tell you from my own sports site that the ability to provide alternate text for each photo is huge in terms of people being able to find it. It impacts both in terms of general web searches and image searches. In addition, you lose the ability to have a distinct file name for each photo that can have keywords (as well as the alternate description) in its name.
The flash pages (galleries) that I have on my site are only found by the title of the page and whatever text I place around the flash content. Flash is efficient in terms of space and speed. It has a beautiful appearance, but I don't know that it is really SEO friendly yet. If I was starting a new site, I would go with HTML and provide text for every picture (and include "Ontario pet photography" in the content of every description) and I would do the same with the file name. Frustrating, I know. But that's my take on it.
If you do dual sites, one for SEO and one for business card and WOM, flash is not a problem.
By all means, secure the more general pet photography domain name. Think of it as prime real estate in a high traffic area. It will only increase in value.
It looks like you've found your niche`! You'll do great!
