I wouldn't even think about shooting a wedding without the 17-55mm 2.8 IS.......Fantastic lens all the way around.

You seem to be missing a fast wide lens. Maybe a prime, maybe along Julie's line of the 17-55. But thats just me.. you may not feel like you need a wide lens. I could happily shoot a wedding with a 35/2 and the 85/1.8 alone, but I generally bring much more just in case.

or just go for the tammy 17-50 VC :D. maybe a macro for details and ring shots. and trade in that 85 1.8 for a 1.2. that's about it i think.

17-55 2.8 IS for the cropper!!! I have used the 17-50 tammy and much preffered the Canon for its is faster better colors and IS for those low light no flash churches
oh yeah a 70-200 2.8 IS as well for those candid moments and close ups

Bingo. My favorite Canon lens (on crop) of all time. The 70-200 2.8 IS is a no brainer... do I even have to mention it's next after you dump that 28-135?
You should be thinking about a second body too. ;)

24-70L all day. I sold mine to get a 17-55 and trust me, the 17-55 doesn't hold a candle to the 24-70.

Now I'm gonna ask another... when considering between the 17-55 IS or the 24-70 L... which do you choose? For those of you that have both or have used both. I was planning on the 24-70 but I've been seeing some love for the 17-55 lately.

I have a 5D2 and use it almost 90% of the time with my 24-70. It's a wonderful events/wedding combo. I also have the 40D, and I think the 24-70 is too long for that camera. I use the 17-40 with a flash if I need to. But on the 40D, the 17-55 is what most pros use. Some of the wedding shooter here won't get near a FF, preferring the 50D or 40D.
I moved the thread to TALK as you do not have an image to share.

Get the 17-55 now. If you were planning on going FF within a couple weeks or a few months, I would get the 24-70. Buy the best lens for now, which is the 17-55. I had used both on my XSi and preferred the 17-55 over the 24-70 on my crop body.

As has been said... if you are going to full frame anytime within (say) the next year, then consider the 24-70 for the benefit of not losing money swapping out later. However, I'd wait on a 24-70 till the spring to make sure Canon doesn't have something up their sleeve... it is almost 9 years old after all. Otherwise, the 17-55 is the right choice if you are staying on 1.6. I've been there. I've used both professionally. Trust me. ;)

tamron 17-50 2.8 is a great alternative, what I use.

100-300 will have zero practical use for weddings; best to sell it and use the money for a wider lens. 28-135 is also limited in usefulness.

I have the 24-70mm on my 40d and love it, but as mentioned above i plan on upgrading to the 5dmkII in mid January. It is an amazing lens, although i never have used the 17-55. Once you get one of these lenses, you wont be using the 28-135 anymore.

I second that, after a taste of L quality it's never the same.

FWIW, the 17-55 is L quality in my book. The main reason it doesn't sport a red ring is because of the EF-S mount. The glass is 95% L quality IMO. ;) Again, that's if you're staying on crop. My 17-55 images always rivaled my 24-105 and 70-200 for quality. (when I shot crop)

It's a great lens, so good I have two of them. The glass isn't far off L quality, but durability and build quality are sub-par. That's why I have two.

Very true... plus, it doesn't get that great L seal either. Still, great bang for the buck if you're on crop for any length of time; no matter how you look at it. I often miss that lens. I guess it's because I'm waiting on Canon dragging their feet with a 24-70 v2. LOL

I've used both the 24-70 and 17-55 on my 40d..... I definitely prefer the 17-55. I know pros that only own a crop body for the sole purpose of using that lens.
It never fails me... I ALWAYS get great, clear shots... and, like amonline said above, it works like an L... Works great in low light. just my pennies

Yea, I've considered picking up a 50D just so I could use that lens... at least until a newer 24-70 came along for my FF.
