ouch! my mom accidentally formatted her memory card. i found flashphoenix that recovered the files as well as zeroassumption but they're a bit pricey and was wondering if anyone knew a free program or a software that had an introductory trial offer. FlashPhoenix is $50 and i didn't really want to pay that for 70 pics.

any help is appreciated!

I have not tried this freeware (http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/smartrecovery.html) myself, but have a look, it might do the trick.

Am I correct in understanding that this software can recover images after formatting of the card? If so, does it make a differece whether it's formatted in the camera or card reader?
It's been suggested elsewhere on this forum that so long as no image is subsequently written to the card such recovery is possible. Any comments?

I have tried lots of recovery software on CF cards - some because I needed to and some just to try and see what I could recover.
Some software will recover formatted data if it has not been overwritten; some will recover earlier overwritten data - very well, just bits of, or not at all.
Different software does recovery in different ways and not always the same every time!
My advice is to have at least a couple of different recovery packages on hand and try them both - or even more packages if the data isimportant.
Oh, and the free software usually, sometimes, often, works as well as, or better, as the bought.
The only thing you can say is that there are no hard and fast rules about data recovery at this level, it's all trial and error.
Of course you could splash out on some forensic recovery software (eg. EnCase) as used by all the law enforcement agencies worldwide - and a training course to go with it. That will recover virtually anything off anything in the hands of a skilled operator because nothing is really gone unless the media is physically destroyed.................
