View Full Version : What other hobbies do you have?

Surely, photography isn't the only thing you're interested in... is it?
At home, my main interests are audio and video. I also like messing around with PCs. When I'm not at home, I like to do sports. I'll pretty much play any sport but I'm a bit of a social being so I'm less interested in doing things solo (e.g., jogging). My favorite, which I try to play as regularly as I can, is basketball.
How about you?

Not really. But I've found an interesting (often partial but what the heck, it works) solution for helping out my hobbies.
Since as a self runned company we do offer several services (see www.imagourbis.net (http://www.imagourbis.net) for what we do) it often happens that the shop where I am buying "stuff" (no matter what it is, guns, cameras, musical stuff etc) requires some professional service from us.
As a company, we do work usually on large enterprises, and we have a non written policy not to take small clients (too much of a stress, no money involved, late payments etc). So, once we have estabilished a decent relationship, I often manage to handle small activities - that would no be worth bein done "officially" by my company - in exchange for what I need. For example, at leat 90% of my guns during the years have been acquired with this type of deal. They save money because of course the pay stuff much less than what they will sell to me, I do not have to worry about clients not paying, and I get what I want without touching my bank account.
Nice and sweet way to get "useless" things that you really want without spending actual money. The works are usually done in my spare time, so I won't loose money with paying clients. It works fine and I really enjoy it.

Never done scrapbooking, but I use the same techniques to make handmade cards. I also enjoy reading. I go through at least 4 books a month (both in english or in swedish) so my book cases are bulging from books. I should get a library card!
The above things relaxes me, but I also write articles for a swedish Mac magazine and translate books (what a surprise!) from english to swedish. I also do some graphic design (and web design) on the side. That pays for my photo hobby. :D

Hi Roger here,
I'm obsessed with bikes and cars, old ones that you need to do stuff on them, I also love to cook and eat, I go to the gym 2-3 times a week....hmm is that a hobby, maybe? Other things I love to do are watch movies, and read magazines, oh I love to travel as well but don't get much time to do it.

I love to read, am writing a book, and have been known to write poetry. I have a 1953 MG TD and a 1971 Toyota FJ40, so mechanics is a big one. I have machine shop tools, welders and I build woodstrip canoes (have lots of woodworking tools). Of course my house takes up too much time and energy. I also shoot and reload, go to the gym, cycling and love canoeing, backpacking and camping. Oh, can't forget, going with my wife to San Francisco or Vegas for nightclubbing and gentlemen's clubs. We always have a blast.

I also play the piano and do cross-stitching! LOL The latter I do maybe once every year. haha

Audio is my other time consuming and money swallowing hobby. Especially fond of tube audio, vinyl and esoteric audio gear. Home theater is for the birds. If God wanted us to listen in 7.1 channel surround sound he would have given us 8 ears. 2 channel stereo is where its at. :)

I am a photographer more so at heart than skill. I have been photographing since 1980 (my teenage years) as a hobby. I have never been able to stop even when $ was an issue. It has only been a year since I decided that I could actually make $ doing what I love. When I am not working, which consumes 9.5 hours of my day, I am photographing activities at home, church and pretty much anywhere I go. Photography is not just my hobby, it is my passion, I love to capture the moment and see the expression on my clients and friends face when I do.

I like to divide my hobbies into 3 categories.
The good ones: Jogging and playing other sports. Mainly touch football and baseball.
The bad ones: Video games and Movies. They really just waste my time.
The expensive ones: Photography and Music. I DJ a bit and I have a "band" with a couple of friends. Good equipment and constant purchase of vinyl is $$$. Photography we all know how expensive it can get. ;)

- Photographing models (I am not sure this actually counts as photography)
- Music (listening to) [technically this may be an addiction]
- Making costumes for models I photograph (not sure this is actually a hobby, but I enjoy seeing them in my costumes (now if I can just get that skirt length thing figured out - always too short for some reason :) 8)
- Science Fiction and horror (reading, watching, discussing)
- Select computer games
Occassional hobbies:
- Model Train (Z-scale (smaller train = larger layout))
- Vegetable Gardening (nearly complete failure so far since moving to Virginia)
- Airshows
- Role playing games (not as much any more)
- Collecting art (when I can afford it that is)
That covers all I can think of right now.

LOL, it is fun, especially for a little boy. As previously mentioned, pvc pipe as a barrel, larger pvc pipe for a ignition chamber. Hairspray works good, but I have been experimenting with calcium carbide. It is a mineral that when combined with water, produces acetylene, which is very flammable. Potatos go a flying!!! The only thing, now my son goes around explaining how to use calcium carbide to blow things up, lol. Not like we have blown stuff up for the fun of it....... ;-)

My biggest hobby besides photography is building Drums.. Especially Electronic Drums.. like the Roland V-Drums line.. It's fun and you can sell them on e-bay and make a little $$ very little, that is why i'm still at my day job.. Plus, Roland is very, very, protective over the copyrights to thier products so you have to be carefull what you do. I have made quite a few acoustic drums as well, mostly snare drums.I also like to shop (I know, wierd for a guy..even my wife will agree) , Gardening and yard work is cool too!
Other than that, I like to rent DVD's and chill in my Lazy-Boy with my cat Cody and watch a good Horror flick!

But I did get VERY good at the orginal Indycar racing (with will not run on a new PC, even a 386DX was almost to fast).
Now I use the PC for surfing, photo-editing and email, and the PS2 for games!
nzl-g3user did you ever watch Babylon 5?

Yep, I got the complete series + TV movies on DVD. that's one cool show. it's a show that has got some really good story that follows from one season to another. It's a shame the guy that created it can't do any thing else. He had a couple of other shows that didn't work out that well.
wazza I have got the same wheel as you. I like it a great deal. It takes alot of getting used to tho. I also play the odd game GT4 :) and I do mean the odd game. that is one game I wish that would come out for the PC but I am not going to hold my beath.

My better half made me watch the complete show, and all the movies, plus the spin off show (which only lasted half a season).
I was doubtfull at the start, but got really involved in it after season 1.
Normaly you would have to read something like Ian M. Banks culture series, or the most holy Asimov Foundation series to get that much Politics, Philosophy and Social critique in a Sci Fi series.

I think I have too many hobbies, because I don't spend alot of time on any of them. I get bored, then move on :)
I like riding my motorcycles and driving my Z-28. I've got a basement full of woodworking tools that haven't seen much use lately. Lots of firearms that haven't seen daylight lately. I've got a 3-year old quad with 30 miles on it.
I guess I spend most of my time in front of this computer, playing in PS, FCE and listening to old music through my old 2-channel stereo hooked up to it. Oh yea, I enjoy watching those odd movies on IFC, and using my GPS.
As far as photography, I just talked my wife into ordering me a17-40 L and a ball head for my tripod for Father's Day :)

Running - I ran track and Cross Country back in my college days and post collegiate road racing circuit. I do other sports for fun and to stay in shape also like Swimming and Mountain Biking. I wan to get back into Triathlons, as soon as I get my sore knee back in shape.
Electronic Music- DJ's , Nightclubs. etc. I will travel to go to a good music festival or for a weekend of good entertainment.
Travel - to do the above mentioned hobbies along with photography. Fav places to visit, Miami, NYC, and Toronto.
Internet - I spend way too much time on it, but I am usually reading about photography or my other hobbies. I like learning and reading tutorials. There is so much information out there, it is nice to learn soemthing new and use it the next day.

Right. Hunting was not on my list, but sometimes during the season I do like a wild pig hunting walkaround. Never tought of bringing along the little Ixus thou. Next winter I will.

I play guitar, and enjoy going to guitar shows. I've been known to fly to other states for a good guitar show.
My band plays its' final gig in two weeks, so I guess I'll have more time for shooting pictures, and for playing guitar for the pure fun of it (instead of being required to show up someplace and play for a set period of time)...

I restore cars (well, one now), stay as far away from computers in my free time as I can (Im a Network Administrator), and try to take in as much of my surroundings as possible, analyze them, and spit out some sort of weird, off the cuff realization of the place I've lived for 13 years.

I like to keep busy. I've played a couple instruments over the years (piano, violin, drums), but now I'm mostly focusing on the guitar. I also like rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, Judo, and I dabble in muay thai. I don't get to do all these things as much as I'd like, but I try to work it in. Life's not worth living if you don't enjoy it. That's my take anyway.

-Video games: my inner nerd lives on
-Cars: hoping to purchase an M3 soon and start autocrossing and going to track days (If I can find a track around here). Detailing my car is another hobby I guess. If the floormats weren't so dirty, you would think it was brand new inside.
-Guitar: I've been playing roughly 5 years now, have an Epiphone Les Paul and Marshall half stack (don't think for a moment I haven't considered selling it all for more camera gear :p)
