Just wondering if anyone has purchased or had a chance to try out the new Sigma 18-50 2.8 lens ?

Just wondering about the quality and sharpness at wide angle

He's talking about the 18-55mm variable aperture lens.

I'm asking about the new 18-50mm 2.8. Big difference, but thanks anyway.

I don't think so

I bought one of the first copies of the 18-50 f2.8. I am well pleased. I'm now gravitating to primes and it is the only zoom I still use regularly. My only complaint is it is not HSM and the focusing ring seems to be just where I hold the lens. I'm afraid someday I'll be gripping it too tightly as it focuses and I'll strip a gear or something. It seems well made and the zoom and focus are very smooth. Images are sharp with good contrast.

Best regards,
Andy

This person has done some kind of review on the said lens. I read it and found it useful.

The specification of Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 looks promising. Is it a model for digital camera only?

Yes, but in return you get a lens that is light, fast and pretty good even at 2.8

This is a very good lens. Optically you will not find much to complain about except that there is some CA (white/purple) when using it wide open. On most sized prints you won't even notice it. By f4 it is mostly gone. Other than that, it is sharp, saturated colors, and an excellent walkaround weight and focal range on a 1.6x. I'd opt for it over any other zoom in its range (17-35, 17-40) for its speed and optical quality.

Well, there you have it. The author gives you a direct personal note on the lens in the above.

Thanks fStopJojo and everyone else who replied. I'm having some trouble with my 17-40 L F4 being soft. Just got off the phone with a Canon Tech Sup and they told me to send it in. Since I'm a member of the CPS the turn around time will only be about 5 day. Hopefully they'll get it up to snuff cause I know this a good lens, and sharper than it's been producing for me.

Thanks,
TB
