View Full Version : Too much of a close-up?

One of my best friends and her dauthers came by and I pulled out the camera for some snapshots. I grabbed this picture. I like it myself, but could it be "too close"? There was some buildings in the bakground that sort of was a distraction, so I zoomed in closer (165 mm on my 80-200/2.8 L lens) to get rid of the busy background. Used the LS II to see how it behaves (haven't started to use it much)... so I wonder if it looks like it's "too much flash" too?

Thanks!! How about the colors? I'm feeling the 350D is creating a bit too much red and when I change the Hue a bit the skin colors looks more natural. But I might have overdone it. Input?

only you can really judge that since you know what she really looks like - but to me - she has a very warm health and youthful glow...
with that said - I find that I in general need to go in and lower the red levels about 10% in a good number of photographs taken with Canon lenses. Maybe that is what the red strip signifies. Cheers.

Lovely shot - I think you're going to have to watch out for the boys when she's a bit older

Hi Petra, This photo looks fine, albeit a bit tight, but apparently that's one way to eliminate a noisy background. ;)
The tone and color look really good, however, I cant help but wonder after seeing how nicely the background seems to be blown out, if you might have gotten away with a slightly wider angle?

Thank you everyone! It's hard to only look at your own screen and see the photo there. It might be totally off, so it'll look totally odd on other monitors. So thanks for the input, then I know I'm aiming in the right direction when I'm lowering the reds (and yeah, I think that's what the red stripe is for! :D )
Ballen Photo, thank you for your input!! Yeah, I don't normally want to crop that close, but then again, kids that age doesn't give you much time to photograph them until they run away and the moment is totally gone.
This is the other shot I got, before she ran away and wanted to play with my two Siames cats that we had out in the garden for "a cat walk".

They're both nice shot and she is very pretty. I like the second shot the best. The skin tone seems warmer to me.

It's a Canon thing ;). To boost slightly reds (well, I don't know about 10D, 20D, or MarkII)
Those are very beautiful pictures. Very very beautiful !
And the pictures looks just fine :)

Too close? No way. It's great. I love the crop/composition and the color. She is a very pretty young lady too. I am awaiting the delivery of my LSII so I'm glad to see this. I think it's really very nice.

Thanks everyone. You guys really boosted my self confidence!!
pompano64, well I do remember the settings in the camera for those shots (1/200 s, f/5.6, ISO 200, focal length 165 mm)... but I do suffer from sometimers, sometimes I remember, sometimes I forget. So when I'll be in a stressed situation my brain will go blank! :D
