View Full Version : I'm lost for words at this! DRebels play sounds for each camera function?

I don't know if these people are stupid or actually believe this...

Could anyone hack the firmware so we could turn off the sounds? Also is it
true that every lens have their own .wav files? Because my lens don't have similar sound when I use autofocusing. I would like to change the autofocusing sound to something less noisy (heard in the USM ones they
added less noisy wavs).

thanks,
.timber

That's really pretty funny  I got a big laugh when I read it. :p :p

I can imagine some folks believe it.

This is too funny. People that dumb shuuld be made to turn in their camera.

Haha! That is quite a good idea.

"Hi, I'd like to return this camera. Reason is that I'm too dumb to own one".

I know that some of the point and shoot cameras play wav files when functions are performed. Just like mobile phones play an audible shutter sound but for SLR's and things to make sounds?? Come on guys!

And can you imagine some lenses having sounds?

I'll have nightmares about zoom lenses now!

Jeez.. sure !!! Otherwise how comes that USM lenses are so less noisy ? They just changed the wav file and it was done... 3K US$, please :D

Seriously, assuming that someone of these dumbasses know really how to read a reverse engineered firmware, there is a point:

Now, we all know that in no way the noises that a DSLR makes are wav files (in fact, they are MP3, don't they ? :D) and that the 20D has absolutely nothing to deal with any type of electronic sound format, why they have the GetFileObject function treating wav files as well ? The only thing that I can think of is that the function called was basically a cut & paste from a P&S camera coding. This of course does not means that the 20D has a P&S firmware onboard, just that the developer was a little lazy... The fact that two different RAW (CRW and CR2)formats are in the list, together with the TIF enforces this feeling.
Any serious programmer here ????

I'm a (failing) computing student. (Only reason I'm failing is that I spend too much time on Photography).

I can understand Canon wanting to use a couple of firmwares for all camera product. It just means that they lock down certain parts of the code. (Like the Rebel code and the Rebel hack).

The thing that they don't seem to notice is that the SLR's don't have speakers in them. All they have is a Piezo Electric Cell to create the "Beep".

And what if there was a problem with the circuitry? Would my Rebel create a 10dB sound whilst yours create a 90dB one?

I think this is the time that I severe myself from that mailing group and just use this forum!

EDIT: (Off topic) Ooh Jackel...your into B1942?

That's exactly wat I was saying. Actually, it seems to me that some parts of the code are common if not for all, at least for a large part of cams. If (and I mean IF) the firmware of the 300 has embedded function calls to audio files, It' s probably true that the 300 FW and some P&S FW share part of the code.

It would make sense for Canon to create a library of low level subroutines for basic funcitons like file handling. These would be common across a range of their cameras. Probably all the ones that support the FAT and FAT32 file systems. That's very, very different from saying that the cameras "share" firmware.

Not re-inventing the wheel is a favourite pass-time of programmers.

But think about it. Now your camera would be able to say things like "I'm sorry. I have encountered an error 99. I appologize for the inconvenience"

Perhaps we could even choose the voice the camera used for erro messages.

lol, someone get them a $10 film camera, that's all they deserve! ;)

Canon no doubt have common code that's shared among cameras, they would most likely only include the necessary code in the firmware of each camera though, rather than include it all and disable some parts. Why waste space? I wonder if the 1D firmware's much bigger than the 20D.

lol, yeah!

I want the sounds enabled. I'm gonna get am EX 580 flash gun and I want a lightning sound effect every time it fires!

My 350D has lots of sounds, my favourite is the smacked arse one, oh, no no,, tell a lie, that's the mirror slapping.

I just found this thread today and laughed my a$$ off.

Guys ... something you're missing is the point of my post. Irony.

I really can't believe that there are people who took that so seriously. And they call me retard ^.^

Get some sense of humour, before you start ranting on someone ^.^

ps> I started with a Praktica MTL-5 with Exaktar 35mm/2.8 and Pentacon 50mm/1.8 lenses about 13 years ago. Still my favourite cam ^.^

I think what they meant to say was that everytime you take a shot, the camera automatically knows what it is and then....... makes a sound to identify it via canon's top secret GPS Satellite tracking system.

i.e. if you shot a lion the camera goes.... Rahhhh!, I am a lion!
