I have had a growing number of IM's asking how I create the borders on most of the pictures I post here and on my web site. As there appears to be some interest I thought I would share what I do. Now I know this is not rocket science and that someone reading this will say "You do it like that.... you silly sod, all you need to do is this". Now if that is the case then all you will get from me is a very big thank you :D
Here goes....
I have created an action in Photoshop that finishes my pictures for the web and adds the border.
After I have resized the image so the longest side is 800 pixels I run the action.
These are the steps in that action.
Open Canvas size dialogue box, set canvas extension colour to white and add 2 pixels to both the width and height.
Open Canvas size dialogue box, set canvas extension colour to black and add 15 pixels to both the width and height.
Open Canvas size dialogue box, set canvas extension colour to white and add 2 pixels to both the width and height.
Open Canvas size dialogue box, set canvas extension colour to black and add 15 pixels to both the width and height.
Convert image to sRGB
Open Image size dialogue uncheck Resample Image and change the resolution to 75 pixels/inch
Change image to 8 bits/channel
Then save.
Here is an example....
