I've been testing my old lens on the XSi all weekend . I bought adapters so i could use then . Tonight i put my SMC Pentax 50mm f/2 on the camera and did a star field test of Jupiter and something else just happens to be in the photo . I'm waiting from some experts to see if what i got is what i think it is . The brightest object in the picture is Jupiter which is easy to see throught the viewer for manual focusing . Anyway i shot 22 images and something else is in each one but a different position with each image . Some of you long timer astro friends should be able to look at the picture and see what i have extra . I won't tell til i know for sure and hopefully this week or next week . I'll probably be dissappointed tho . Meanwhile heres Jupiter upclose with a Pentax 50mm and an XSi . BTW it was on a tripod.... . Also i might add this is not PP'ed except resized and changed to jpeg for posting here .

Is that a comet to the left of centre?

or an internal lens reflection ? :(

The "object", if it's the little blur you're talking about, does appear to be almost exactly "opposite" Jupiter, as in the other side of the centre of the image. If Jupiter was moving to the right and the "object" was moving in the opposite direction left, then I would say internal reflection.

However, stick the images into a short animation and post that...might give more of an idea. Are there comets or anything up there at the moment?

Actually, now you mention it, it could be reflection. Seems diametrically opposite the bright Jupiter. The comment about it moving gets me, though.

The comment about it moving gets me, though.

Ron wasn't tracking, which means Jupiter would be moving, and then so would the reflection, (if that's what it was). Which is why I'd be interested to see the other shots.

Looking more closely at the shot, it does look just like the sort of reflection I get in my nifty fifty. I hope it's not though.

I've had Internal Reflections before with the moon and i know what your talking about but all my reflections have been a bluis-aqua tint... , never had green before . But time will tell and when i get home from work i'll do more checking out of the original images .

Ok , got a reply back from Harvard CDAT center and it's a internal reflection of Jupiter :( . Oh well , did the heart good to get it pumping :D !

I'm sorry that it didn't work out but I'm glad that you followed it through.
The "Super Multi Coating" (SMC) is Pentax's own anti-reflection coating which is different (they would say better, I'm sure) than everyone elses. That might explain the different color.

Steve.

To bad it didn't end up being "Comet Ron" ;)

At least it would be one we could pronounce!
