We are working on putting together a photography Encyclopedia. This is a HUGE undertaking and will probably take years to complete...if ever.

We are using what is called WIKI software. What is WIKI software:

Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly.

Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself.

Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users.

The idea here is that the users add to the encyclopedia.

We are looking for contributors to contribute to the encylopedia as often and much as they want.

Specific Postions:

Writers - Write content in one or more area. Suggest areas to add to the wiki. Number needed: UNLIMITED

Editors - Responsible for an area or areas of the wiki. They control their area(s) and have editorial control. Suggest and create new areas.

Number Needed: Up to 100 or more. Each area will need an editor or editors.

Wiki Technical Experts - Have you used or setup a WIKI before? We need your help to tweak things and help create wiki templates.

Number Needed: Between 1-10

Users can add to any subject currently available, edit any entry currently in the encylopedia or create new subjects.

An example entry looks like this:
http://wiki.thephotostation.net/tik...?page_ref_id=51

This is sample Ansel Adams page or entry in the wiki. We will create templates for each area or subject and we will look for you, the user, to enter information. This information can easily be updated or edited by anyone at anytime.

Now, we just started this project this week and have a very basic structure to start with:

http://wiki.thephotostation.net/tik...?page_ref_id=21

As time goes on, we will be adding to the structure by creating new areas of interest and subjects.

If you are interested in contributing to this project, all you need to do is sign up:

http://wiki.thephotostation.net/tiki-register.php

Then contact me via email (admin@thephotostation.net) and I will give you directions on how to edit. You can then pick an area you want to create or edit and off you go. There is a slight learning curve but once you learn it, it is very easy to add/edit content.

If there is an area you want to edit, that is not yet listed in the structure, let me know and I will create it for you. Any subject remotely related to photography is acceptable.

Since this is an "open-source" type project, we ask that the information you add be correct and on point.

Editors can request to be responsible for areas they want to be responsible for. It will be up to you to make sure your area is kept up to date and valid.

We hope to get moving on this and our goal is to have 1000 pages of content by the end of this year.

We hope you join us in this interesting and fun project. All writers and editors will get full credit for the work they do. (So will you technical experts).

Some other issues: We do not allow copyright infringments. If you are copying information from a book or website, you MUST give the original author credit. We also require you to contact that author and ask permission to use his or her content. If the owner of the content requests content to be deleted, we will delete the content if it is confirmed they are the original author.

Good luck and have fun!
