got it at lowes today...seems very solid and it has cutaway foam so it was easy to make holes for the camera...my film slr is in there because i was using the 300d to take the pics...also the 50mm 1.8 goes in the empty spot

Not a bad idea at all for someone on a budget, but you might want to have some padding underneath the camera and lenses now that you cut the original padding out. Maybe you could cut the foam you took out in half height wise and then put it back it, that way it will be fitted with some padding on the bottom.

there is some padding on the bottom built in so its not just sitting on metal...its thin padding but it seems pretty good

$25 is a little higher than I've been getting them at Home Depot and Menard's. $15-$19

I have six of them for my video stuff. I got them a couple of years ago, and they are holding up very well.

One added bonus...You look like secret agent man. just add a handcuff form the handle to your wrist and people would stare like the dickens!!! ;)

I have a large version of a case like this. They are fantastic for protecting gear in transit. But beware that the silver shine of a metal case is a neon sign to thieves. Do yourself a solid and toss a backpack into your trunk. When you get where you are shooting take the camera out of the case and put whatever gear you need in the backpack. No it's not any more secure than a case and it is even less protective. But it will not attract the attention that metal cases do.

Just a quick question for willg:

Did you say that you purchased that metal case at Lowes? The home improvement store? Wow,I never knew they sold cases like that. If you don't mind, can I ask what department you found it in? I'd be interested in checking them out the next time I go to one.

Thank you in advance,
Tom

I picked up 2 of these cases about 2 months ago. I must say you can't spend a better $20-$25 bucks on anything else to protect your equipment.

What happens when you change gear, can you buy new foam? Where do you keep all the filters, extra batteries, etc.?

The astronomy crowd has been using these for years. I have two, one with a scope in it and another with eyepieces etc.

I would suggest that you let the case set around open for a few days before putting your equipment into it. The foam can have problems with out-gassing (did you notice a smell?) which can cause a film to develop on the les/eyepieces.

Yeah. I use them for carrying around my PC Repair Kit. Never thought of it for my camera and stuff....but I sure am now. Cool idea...thanks for posting pics.

Seems pretty useful. I might have to give these a try.

On my college campus a raccoon stole my friend's car keys. Comedy ensued for hours as they tried to get them back.

Willg,
Thanks so much for the info about where to find that box in Lowe's. I just went there at lunch time and bought one :-) At first I had a little trouble finding it, as I was looking for this shiny aluminum box to just sort of grab my eye. Lo and behold, I discovered them in protective cardboard boxes, stacked on their sides, toward the bottom of one of the shelves. A couple of the boxes loooked opened, which normally would be fine, except that 2 that I looked in were missing both the shoulder strap and keys. Fortunately I found a completely intact one that was still in its inner plastic sleeve. (For anyone else looking to buy one, just check to make sure everything is in the box before you take it up to the register, as I suspect the straps and keys grow legs and walk out the doore ;-))

Thanks very much for your assistance, Willg. This case seems very, very sturdy indeed, and for $24.99, it really is a great buy

Tom
