I have been reading through the forums for a few days and not sure if I am making the right decision for a tripod. I have a canon powershot pro1 and looking for a decent all around tripod. What is important to me is size and weight, but not so much so that I sacrifice use. I read recommendations from $65 to $1000 and can definately say that although I don't want the $50 walmart special I also am not ready to justify the huge price. I have read articles saying you will save hundreds of dollars if you just go out and spend the $1000 now but at this point I still think that is way overkill. As you can tell from my camera choice at this point in time that I am not a professional and most of my pictures are family pictures indoor about 60% and outdoor 40%. I figure most of the initial use will be for indoor portrait shots and eventually some outdoor shots, I might even put my sony trv33 mini dv camcorder on it.

So far I think I have narrowed down my choices to the following but would like some advise on if this is a smart choice for what I am looking for.

Velbon Ultra Maxi SF
or
Velbon Ultra Luxi SF

Both seem a decent size and wight and although not the Gitzo or Bogen quality the price point seems right for me and most importantly I think I will actually carry the thing around. I am just starting out, and at the beginning stages of playing with photography and what I enjoy most is capturing pictures of my wife and kids.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

i dont know those models but things to consider:
1) the legs have a brace between them to provide extra Rigidity
2) when its up it does not wobble or vibrate
3) the head only needs one arm to control and move around
4) extends to approx your height without winding the centre column to much as this reduces rigidity

edit:
the maxi looks ok
http://www.velbon-tripod.com/maxi.htm

cant find the other one on that site

but from here

Given that the Pro 1is a ZLR and to be condenscending, the weight is not an issue. Most tripod can handle the weight of your camera. But you should consider legs that you can grow with. What i mean is that buy legs you can replace the head and legs that will allow you to get closer to the ground. I don't recommend the legs that have crank handles rapid column works faster. check out the Velbon Chaser EFL-3 (A). Mind you I'm not a big fan of Velbon its just that you mention it and it fits with in your price range.
