How should I shoot this? I have never done star trails before? High ISO? High Aperture? 30 sec exposures, noise reduction on or off? How do I combine the images? what program do I need?

Depends the LP in your area . If a dark area then tripod your camera and shoot 30-sec shot at ISO and if the image is too washed out then drop the ISO to 800 ISO . Use a WA lens and set at different apetures til you get one that shots everything good without washout . if your in a very dark area and no LP to worry about then high ISO and apeture wide open and adjust accordingly til you still have a nice star field without LP washout . BTW turn off NR on your camera and shoot RAW if you can .

Ditto on that one. Cloudy for a while, plus rain and snow showers. Ughhhh....

If you shoot raw, can you still combine the images with that program?

If your lucky enough to capture a meteorite i would not stack any image cause you may loose all the data to it by covering the meteor up . Just go out and start snapping away and don't worry about stacking .

of course my friggin neighbor behind me just installed a 4 million candle power light in his backyard! I guess I'll have to hop in the car, I'll bitch about that to him tomorrow. I am hoping to catch something good...

I'll see what I can catch tonight.
LP is not an issue here, but it isn't the clearest sky right now.
I'll have to wait and see how it goes!

Looking awfully clear here tonight.
Plan to head out around 1:30 and call it quits about 4:00. I plan on setting out my camera in a ziplock bag for the drive north as well as I have a couple of extra batteries. Any body have any other good tips? It's going to be a cold one, low around 23 degrees tonight. I'm hoping for a cold, crisp, clear night and I just might get it. Good luck to all watching.

Cloudy as usual here. We spent a couple of hours outside already tonight but it's getting more overcast... I'll take another look in a couple of hours.

Hmm, I just spent 6-7 minutes or so laying on my back deck. It is quite clear now directly above me. I can see millions of stars. Unfortunately I didn't see anything in that short time. I'll head out at 1:00am or so (midnight now) and take the camera with me this time.

You know, I've often wondered and this is probably a stupid question, but If I see a meteor here in KS, is it possible that someone else can see the same meteor far away in say Canada. Or is it pretty local? I would think it would cover a pretty large area, but I'm not sure.

If you see one in KS and if i'm looking in the same area at the same time then i would also see the same meteor here in Midland Texas . However if your in Canada i probably wouldn't cause the altitude difference is too great .

Best if it's on a FF but on a crop it will work , just not as much of a WF shot as a shorter lens or FF camera . You just don't get a very WFOV with a 50mm . My first meteor i ever caught thought was with a Pentax K1000 film with a 50mm lens . That picture is on my website in the DeepSpace catagory .

Today might be the only clear night in my part of the UK this week, so I'll be out.
With a 50mm you'll be lucky to catch a meteor really, unless we get tens of thousands per hour! Still possible though...my sister saw a meteor through my 2800mm scope the other day!
