View Full Version : Thinking of upgrading

I'm thinking about upgrading from my 30D, as much as I like the 7D it's out of my price range.
If a 60D is released early next year, what improvements or changes do you think we will see over the 50D?

I think just go for 40d or 50d... it's not the equipment that makes the picture. it's how the eye sees it ;)

I think Canon will include a toaster oven. That would be totally sweet!

I think DPreview supports pointless speculation about vaporware, and there is a section here at POTN that also supports it.
What do you want? 100% crops of high ISO shots from a camera that doesn't exist?

Are you always this happy, or is just the time of the mo---.

I will defend their comments. To be honest, it is hard to predict what a camera will be like when it does not even exist yet. Nor do we really know when it will. Coming from reports from Canon, the "60D" will have specs between the 50D and the 7D. I can see an increase of better focusing and a lack of video function.....but again that is just a guess. Canon will either be way above or below what we all think they will come up with. If you need the camera now, get the 50D plain and simple. Since you are unsure, just keep the 30D until/when/if the 60D is released. You will always be waiting if you always wait for the new greatest thing to come out.

It's worth pointing out that before the 5D Mark II was launched a good 75% of the expected features were totally wrong. Same with the 50D. I never saw any speculation of the 7D that expected anything other than a revved up 5D....the 1.6X format was a total surprise to the internet pundits.
I probably would have simply never seen this thread had it been posted in the 'rumors' forum, but since it appeared in the 'general photography' area I feel no compunction to hold back on commenting about how useless it is to try and plan one's purchases around cameras that do not exist.

JefferyG is right in his opinion - how can you decide if you want the next big thing if no one knows what it is?
No one can know what the next camera will bring(apart from Canon R&D) so IMHO, just go and buy the best you can afford at the moment. And ignore the naysayers regarding the 50D - it is a damn good camera. Its just it wasnt as huge a difference from the 40D as some had hoped but its still worth it as a jump from a 30D.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again and I don't care if it stings -
If you have to ask on a forum what you should upgrade to, then you are probably not ready to upgrade.
Your own instinct and gut feel should tell you what and when to upgrade to.
We can't tell you because we are not you and don't know how you will use it.
What is your 30D holding you back from doing - or are you just a gear junkie just wanting to have the latest and greatest??

For a year I shot the 5D exclusively and I did have some niggles about it that I would have preferred to have improved. I figured when the 5D Mark II was launched I would probably get one for the awesome new AF system.
So when the 5D Mark II was launched and it did not have a significant change in the features I wanted I bought a used 1D Mark III. I had never planned on that, but the actual feature set of the 5D Mark II decided me.
As for the 60D.....it will be 1.6X, it will have more pixels than the 50D, and like all Canon dSLRs going forward it will shoot video. Most all else is open to specuation.

60d should be similar in features as a 50d (add video) and hopefully have IQ similar to the 7D.
