Girls Basketball

Last week my granddaughters started playing basketball & they both play center for their teams. I was able to get these shots using the high speed shutter on my 40D. They are in the 7th & 5th grades and both of the girls teams won!!

I don't use flash at basketball games.. but you seem to have in the first one but not the second one?

The gym in the 2nd shot has huge windows around the top (cropped out) and that provided lots of natural light, so I shot without the flash since it was not needed. The gym in the first one has mixed lighting that is pretty dim and no windows, so flash was the best way to go. I can get two shots at high shutter speed with the flash, so that helped me catch the moment.

When using flash you have to really pick your shots and get your timing down because you can't fire off as many shots. I set my camera shutter speed at 250 and my ISO at 800 to 1200 depending on the light in the gym and fire away. I use my 24-105 and I let the camera select the lens opening, which is mostly f4, and it works just fine.

I've thought about trying my 24-105. Looks like it works just fine. Good job.
