What do you all recommend? I do plan on using a macro rail eventually because I am not really into shooting bugs and plants and stuff.
What are the best brands out there? I've been looking at the Manfrotto 190xprob and the 055xprob, but only because a friend recommended them to me. I don't need anything that's top of the line, but I do want a tripod that will last me a few years.
Any suggestions?

I've tried using a monopod for a brief amount of time, but I found it extremely distracting when chasing after those little winged creatures. Most insects don't like to sit still and a tripod or otherwise can get in the way more often then not when trying to get close to the subject.
I heard a few members on here mention using a bean pole as a stabilization untility, but I wouldn't doubt it if alot of these folks just went with handheld and a good flash.

noopi,
I use the Manfrotto 3021B pro which is now the 055XPROB and have been very happy with years of use for macro, and all other photography. :)

I sometimes use a Manfrotto 694 Magfibre 4 Section Monopod when using the MP-E and flash, but mostly to tack the weight of the kit at difficult angles. Operationally other than this it gets in the way for insects.
For flowers, fungi and that I use a little Velbon CF 530 Pro Tripod, Velbon PH-253 ball and socket head, although this is light weight (1.1Kg) as long as you use mirror lockup it is fine. The head may be a bit prone to creep with heavier lenses but it is very usable with the 180L and 300f4L IS. Velbon are somewhat a budget make but I have been very impressed with the pro range, very good value.
I do also have a very old Benbo Tripod and Kirk BH-1 Ball Head (the head replaced on old Gitzo offset Ballhead whose casing cracked). I only tend to use this at home as it weighs in at about 4Kg and I just can't drag that and the camera kit on a 12 mile walk like I did in my 20s. I need some heavy duty legs to go with the Kirk but "she who must be obeyed" thinks new carpets are a higher priority.

Thanks for all your replies! I've been looking at the 055XPROB more and more, and I'll probably end up with that one. =] I just bought a 580 ex II flash, and I'm supposed to receive it tomorrow. So now I'm thinking about flash brackets and stuff as well. =P

No help from me I'm afraid -all of my shooting is hand held.

I have the 190XPROB Carbon fibre with a Velbon focusing rail and it works like a charm!
Great for focus stacking and keeping things vibration-free.
