Hi all. I will be shooting some family baptisms and first communions with the 50D. Most churches allow no flash.
I will be using what is in my sig plus I would like to add another lens to my collection.
I don't know if I should go with a 10-22 for the restaurent pics later on at night or get a lens to replace the 17-40mm for the ceremony shoot.
- Canon 10-22
or
- Sigma 30mm/1.4
- Canon 50mm/1.4 and sell the 1.8 I have
- Canon 85mm/1.8 - this I wonder if it would be a great range for the ceremony.
any others maybe...
thx

I wouldnt go for the 10-22 right now. Its a fun lens, but i dont really find myself using the UWA too often. If you forgo the 10-22 you should be able to buy the 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8, and if you sell the 50mm 1.8 you should be able to save up a little more to get the 30mm. That would be a good prime setup, and i am trying to build up the same get-up.

Sigma 30 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/381615-REG/Sigma_300101_30mm_f_1_4_EX_DC.html/BI/2312/KBID/3114). I don't like the Canon 50 1.4 or 1.8 at all, i've owned both. 10-22 is too slow for most churches, and your 17-14 is wide enough most of the time. I use my 10-22 occasionally.

Isn't this the 30mm that is suppose to be sharper than the Canon L or is that the Sigma 50mm?

It's meant to be comparable with the 35L, but often needs to be calibrated to reach its potential. The L will be better in the corners, and works on full frame, the Sigma 30 is crop sensor only for all practical purposes.
The Sigma 50 1.4 has a great reputation too.

Anyways thanks for your help...I am getting it in the next few minutes at $412 USD shipped to me in Canada from DigitalRev on Ebay.
This lens looks way bigger than the 50 1.4 Canon Yay. I like meaty ones.

Welcome :) It's comparable in size to the Canon 50 F1.4, if it's bigger it's not by much.

What was it about the Canons you didn't like that the Sigma offered, if you don't mind me asking?

Hey Tim. I Am so glad you took the time to respond and open my eyes to such a great lens.
I just received my lens today and started to muck around with it. Turns out I will be shooting about 200 people at a ceremony as they arrive movie premiere style in front of a backdrop for a new magazine launching.
Turns out the 30mm will do the trick and that makes me even more happy to have added it to my lens collection.
I am comparing it to the Nifty Fifty at f/1.8 (sigma at f/1.4) and it looks on par!

Glad you like it, but I have to say the Sigma 30 does a lot better at focusing than the 50 F1.8, and the image quality's better. This lens often needs calibration before it reaches its full potential.
One thing to note is with a wider lens you'll get more background in, so with a background you might like to use a longer lens than 30mm.

For baptisms in a church my experience was that they didn't let me stand up or move around. For those times, the longest lens possible was necessary.
