Lens barrel extension growl

I just noticed that my one-month-old Powershot G1 makes a growling noise about half the time when the lens barrel is being extended or retracted. It's hard to hear unless your ear is fairly close to the camera, but there is a noticable vibration felt in the hand.

Is this normal for this camera or is the motor failing?

I just tell my photo friends that it's meaner than their camera.

Yep, mine started grinding a month after I got it. Doesn't seem to affect peformance anyway. :)
