Let's say I'd like to fire my camera wirelessly and have the camera trigger two off-camera flashes at the same time. What combination of pocket wiz do I need to have this work? Thanks!

If you want one off camera flash, three PW II Plus units will get the job done.

Two off camera flash units will require four PW.

Read the section in the manual on "Relay Mode".

Enjoy! Lon

Actually, you'd need one PW Plus II at a minimum, and for the off-cam flashes, you can use either a Plus Receiver, Plus II, Multimax, or TT5.

To trigger the whole shebang, you'd need either a Plus Transmitter, Plus II, MultiMax, TT1, TT5, or a Sekonic model R-capable light meter.

The MultiMax and the TT5 can both do the same job the Plus II can so you don't have to have a Plus II in the mix. But, yes, you do need a minimum of four (4) PW units.

Why would you need 4 PW's if you only have 2 flashes off camera? Wouldnt you need 3? (One on camera, one on each flash)? I'm not familiar with PW's, so just curious!

The OP said that he wants to fire his camera wirelessly so he'll need a transmitter in his hand to do that. So that's the 4th unit. :)

yup, which is why I said "at a minimum".

Technically though, you'd still only need three pocketwizards (at a minimum) for two off cam flashes. I often use my Sekonic meter to do all the triggering.

Yes, the Sekonic will work, too, but you'll only be able to shoot a single shot at a time. You won't be able to do short bursts with it.

You'll also need a shutter release cable between the on-camera PW unit and the camera shutter release port if you don't already have one. Something like this:

Alright, after looking into the PocketWiz's, I'm kind of forced to ask this question: is there a cheaper alternative? I mean is there a way to get the same results (triggering the camera wirelessly and firing two flashes off camera) without digging so deep into my pockets? if there's not a way, that's cool... I just figure I'd ask anyways :-)

Yes, there is but just note then that you'd need five (5) wireless units instead of the 4 that would be required for the PW units. You'd need one transmitter (1) in your hand, a receiver (2) for the remote camera to trigger it, another transmitter (3) sitting in the hotshoe of the camera (or plugged into the PC port), and two more receivers (4 & 5), one for each of the the two flashes.

If your camera is the 1DmkII, the Canon RC1 IR remote will definitely not work for you.

The remotes in the 2nd link probably will (for triggering the flashes) but I have no personal experience with them to be able to tell you how well they'll work for you.

3 PWs and one of those cheap chinese remotes would work.

I have the cheap radio trigger for the 5D that I bought for ~30 bucks if I remember right, worked at about 200 feet or less. My little one broke off the antenna, now it's still working but not too far, about 50 feet then it starts missing.
