Rockefeller Center, for sure, but there are lots of places with Xmas lighting. All up and down 5th Ave, Times Square, Broadway, Grand Central Station, Empire State Building, etc, etc. Don't overlook all the normal attractions while going for Xmas stuff. Have fun.

Go visit B and H.
I would recommend getting out of the touristy areas for at least 2 days. There is so much more to NYC.

where are you staying? Less 'touristy' places of interest might be Little Italy, Chinatown and Soho. The Bronx Zoo has a holiday lights exhibit and is always nice, the botanical gardens are near there as well.

Hey! I'm heading out there as well from the 604. Planning on bringing the 450d, 11-16, 17-50, 28 1.8, 85 1.8. Not sure if that's overkill... might leave the 28 1.8 at home. Checking out this sub-forum for ideas of where to shoot as well...

I'm on the bolt bus, right now as I type (wifi on the bus, pretty cool), headed from DC to NYC. Figured I'd check to see if anyone knew of some extra interesting spots along 5th avenue for some neat photos.
We're staying at the Hilton on 7th Avenue, so I'm planning on taking pictures while my wife and her mom are shopping.

the window displays are great, Don't miss St. Patrick's cathedral (Madison ave btwn 50th and 51st) it is right across from Rockefeller Center. Crappy weather the next few days, bring your (camera) rain gear.

If you can get tickets to the radio city christmas spectacular it is really a great show.

On Wednesday evening they blow up the balloons for the parade on 79th street off Central Park west near the museum of natural history. this is a very fun event, and then of course the parade on Thursday is awesome.

I was only in town for 3 days, so headed back down today (wednesday afternoon). Our hotel was right in between Times Squre and the 5th Ave shopping district. So I got a few cool shots of times square at night and then the Cathedral over on 5th Ave (St Patrick's, I believe)
It was pretty fun, but a really quick trip. We mainly went up to see Chicago on broadway, and eat at a few chinese restaurants

I'm headed up the week before Christmas also. So subscribed to this thread :D
I'm planning on taking Tripod, 7D, Tamron 28-75, nifty Fifty (maybe) and Canon EFS 55-250. I have a 70-200 L but that's too much to lug around I believe.
Think I'd need a flash??

Thought I'd respond again now that I'm not on the bus with spotty internet.
I had most of my good shots using my Sig 10-20, to be honest, aside from a few portraits of the family, that was the only lens I really felt the need for in the city. I put the 24-60 on one afternoon to try and get myself to take more shots of people and details, but just found myself wanting the wide angle most of the time that lens was on the camera.
Best locations I shot at (and I'm sure they'll get better as the xmas season kicks into full swing) - the shopping area throughout 5th avenue since many of the stores have nice lights and the Cathedral was awesome; Rockefeller square had a ton of shooting spots with all the random lights, trees, flags, decorations; Times Square obviously was loaded with neat angles and lighting; random cityscapes while walking around the city. Chinatown would've had a ton of cool shots for random people and shops, but it felt a little shady to have my nicer camera sticking out. Fun times though!
