Does anyone know how to get the owner name (the one you change in the camera using EOS viewer) to show up in the Author field of a picture when you right click in Win Xp?
My name comes up in the exif data in most programs but nothing in XP.

I second this question.
This seems to me to be a WinXP problem.
As ACDSee shows the owner name in the Canon Maker section, but the WinXP leaves the Owner field empty.

When you're talking abut this file, is it something written by the camera...
What I'm getting at is... (regarding the 20D) is there some sort of file kept by the camera that records information about each picture?
If so, what is kept?

DallasG, the information on camera settings, time, date, etc are embedded in the JPG by the camera when the photo's taken.
Do you mean the thumbnails that XP does? I don't use XP to display images, ACDSee or similar does a much better job.

The title and author fields in WinXP's file properties aren't from the EXIF information, although some of the EXIF fields are displayed when you view Properties | Summary. Only the data in the Image section comes from the EXIF data for a picture. The other two fields draw from MS' Alternate Data Stream for a file IIRC.

I figured this out about a month ago.
You have to connect your camera to your computer and go into the remote capture program.
(I don't have my laptop @ work today; so I don't remember which menu it is in)
Poke around n the menus and you will find it. I put "copywright [name] 2005" in the name field.
If you need more detailed instructions; lmk and I will append post tonight/tomorrow.

that makes sense...geez...why would MS do that.

Set up your camera for remote capture using Canon's Utility ‘Remote Capture'
Once open, connect to your camera
In the ‘Shooting' Dialog box that opens, click on Camera and then Camera Settings
In the Owner's Name field type your name
Take a picture Remotely and either save or delete
All photos taken after this will contain your name in the 'Owner's Name' box of the EXIF info

In 350D/ XT what you need to do is,
1. Connect camera
2. Open Canon Utilities->Camera Window (Click application Camera Window) or it opens by default on connecting camera.
3. Go to tab2 (Set to Camera) and click Confirms/Changes camera setting
4. Set Owner's Name and click Apply.
Next time you take a picture you will have Owner's Name filled up in EXIF data.

We're talking two different things here.
Camera Settings allows you to enter the name into the camera, where it will be saved as part of the EXIF data.
The "Author" field you get when you right-click a file in Windows and choose "Properties | Summary" draws from elsewhere, because that same information can be displayed for other document types as well. It wouldn't make sense to try to read an EXIF for a spreadsheet, nor could Microsoft include all the possible places author name could be stored with a file. Accordingly, they set Windows Explorer up to read either Author field from MS Office documents or the ADS for anything else. Sure, they could have added JPG support. But then what about TIFF, PDF or all the other types we know about?

That data is stored as a "block" in the file itself.
