I've been quoted £92 to repair my STE2..... seems very steep to me. If anyone owns or uses one of these bits of kit, please take note that they are pretty fragile (well mine was anyway). I got it off ebay over a year ago so it isn't covered by warranty.
Can anyone recommend any alternative, cheaper product at all?
Will an RF602 trigger a 430EX from a 40D?

A long offshoe cord/pc sync cord from flashzebra so you maintain ETTL otherwise radio trigggers + manual shooting.

ST-E2 = manufactured by Playskool for Canon. P.O.S.
How come router manufacturers can put out multiple new routers with new features every year but we can't get an update to a wireless flash controller but once a decade?

very true! - not very happy with the repair price at all. That's easily over 50% value of a brand new unit to start! What component in this unit could possibly cost even half that!?
Anyway, I guess the Yonguo RF602 is a radio transmitter? that's not too much of a problem for the kind of shots I am taking. Anyone know if one will work with a 40D though... and a 5D if I upgrade?

It should work with both cameras. I'm going to Radiopoppers and another 580 as a master.

Yes the RF602 will work with your settup, but, you will only have manual control of the flash, you lose the E-TTL you had with your ST-E2.

pretty much sums the debate on cheap radio triggers to new current triggers. if you want to save time running back and forth to your monolights; radiopoppers will fit the bill

Agreed, the ST-E2 is in desperate need of a makeover. It's a shame too, since it can be such a handy tool... but it sucks. :(
IMO, if you're using any body that allows you to control the a Speedlite through the body, you're just better off using a 580EXII to trigger remotes. No need to remember weird button pushing sequences and that kind of thing.

I wouldn't hold your breath... with the 7D it's obvious that Canon is moving towards in-body wireless flash.

And this is why Radiopopper, or some other agile company, should produce an ST-E2 replacement with LED screen, proper menu system, and an interchangeable RF wireless module.
Wouldn't that just kick ass? AF assist, ETTL, radio control, manual control, all in one compact unit.

That would be handy...and give it a standard battery too.
