Home shows for the Hilltop Hoods are a special occasion. There's something in the air, a unique connection between what's happening onstage and what's going on with the audience. It's almost as if the fans "own" the Hoods and this show is theirs. With families and friends also in attendance, the mood before the show was akin to a Christmas relo bash, but instead of Aunty Flo's slow cooked turkey, we were set to feast on some of the worlds best hip hop.

And feast we did.

The Hilltop Hoods have their show perfected, hitting every nail square on the head. The set didn't slow for even one song.

The lighting tonight was spot on the entire show, making my job a complete breeze. It's pretty handy having access to the lighting technician - by knowing the songs and what the lights are planning on doing I was able to set up shots based on the lights. You only get lighting like this with a well versed technician and the Hoods have their man and they travel with him everywhere. And it shows. Much credit for these shots should be directed his way.

Having AAA and being able to shoot the entire show also opened up a bunch of shots that otherwise wouldn't have been possible. Before tonight I had planned shots I wanted to try, the one behind Debris could ideally be better if it was shot with fisheye, the crowd lit up and Pressure & Suffa on either side of the stage, but damn, to coordinate all those elements was almost impossible! I'll get it one day tho!!

The afterparty (thankfully) was not photographed - my gear was checked behind the bar and the only lifting my right arm did was to chauffeur a silly amount of alcohol into my mouth - a move I certainly regretted the morning after!!

There's one more at my site too (and it's a good one for illustrating the timing with the lighting)

#4's real pretty. Although i'm also not that much of a fan of the genre, i'm deffers a fan of blokes supporting (and shooting) local music. Aussie music pride, no matter the genre :D.

haha, yeah 06 is a signature shot!

i'm finding more and more genre's are opening for me. i'm all about the performance and how it can challenge me photographically :)

I agree with this statement. Often when shooting genres I am not really into my shots will be better as I am more focused (no pun intended) on the photography only whereas if I'm shooting an act I really like the music can distract from the photography a little.

thanks richard :)

yep, completely agree with your point too. often if the band is a favourite it's sometimes difficult to not just stop and watch them!!

on another note, richard i'm still waiting to see/shoot eddy current suppression ring - they are locked in for the laneway festival so it looks like i'll get that chance! sweet :)
