I bought a cheap Hoya skylight off eBay just in case I ever needed it, though I don't usually bother with them, and I noticed something strange. It came in a circular container!
Purely out of curiosity - when did filter companies start using the square containers rather than the screw on circular ones?
(And there's nothing wrong with these old filters, right?)

I have bought filters in the last 2 years that still come in the round screw containers. In Fact I think only my Hoya filters have come in the square ones.

The only new filters I've bought (all in the last year - haven't been into photography that long) were Tiffen and Hoya filters, and they came in square containers...

I haven't seen a round filter container this century :{)# Of course, my experience is limited to B+W, Hoya and Heliopan.
As for whether there's anything wrong with the older filters - are they S-HMC? If not, you'll probably have fairly noticeable flare/glare problems with them; if they're not even HMC multicoated, you definitely will.

It's the mystique of fitting a round peg in a square hole.

Oh, it was like 10 dollars, so I doubt it. Hopefully it won't be much of an issue, as I only bought something to use in a worst case scenario - maybe it's hailing outside but there's a leprechaun, or something.

The cheapest model of Hoya is probably about as bad as a Tiffen...

My Hoya HD and Canon filters came in circular cases. The only square cases I've gotten were from B+W.
