Finally got around to posting up a blog with images from my coverage for HBO on the Pacquiao-Cotto fight, figured I'd post up a link since POTN's Dwight McCann would get a kick out of the "Eye in the Sky" images as he likes to call them. Thanks for looking, love to hear comments...

Excellent work...and an excellent fight.

Could you share what gear you were working with?
Thanks!

What? Where is the obligatory 'Eye-in-the-Sky'™ shot of the Ring Girls? Those are the ones that sell as you well know! When shooting away from the mat what lens/setup do you use or were those a second low-level remote (which I'm thinking about in the future.)

No ring girls posing at this one Dwight, sorry, besides, these can't sell, they are for HBO, so action only!

The setup on the remote was a Mark IIN with a 16-35 f2.8II lens set somewhere around 24mm. Off the top of my head I want to say f4.5, iso 1250, 1/400th.

Shooting from up top was a Mark III with a 400mm f2.8. Dressing room shots were a Mark III with a 24-70 f2.8, no flash in the dressing room, or a LensBaby Composer at f2.0.

Thanks, Ed! So the long lens wasn't remote ... OK. I am thinking of adding a second remote camera to shoot from the "long" angle, maybe from the video camera platform at one end of the room, set to cover the whole ring. It would fire in tandem with the one in the overhead lighting truss using two TT5's triggered by a handheld TT1. I have pre-ordered a 1DMIV which I would use as my primary body on the mat and use a 1DMIII as the second remote body along with my 5DMII. I plan to get a second 1DMIV and will keep my two current 1DMIIIs for backup and remote shooting and will use the 5DMII and my 1DsMIII in the studio. Of course, as with most of my projects, it will likely take me six more months to a year to get it working.

You are going to love the Mark IV, I shot it on Saturday for an undercard bout. Flat out awesome...

I've been running a remote off of the ring post, tough to get clearance, but with HBO I can. I may do it again next weekend in Quebec.

I hope so after the troubles with my the 1D(s)MIII's!!!

Post a picture of this "ring post" setup. Showtime will let me do pretty much anything I can think up that doesn't block their cameras. ;)

Ask and ye shall receive...I've done this twice, the first is a set up shot of the cam, this was the first time we tried it (and failed) It got in the way of the giant slo-mo cam, so down it went. The other two times it was successful were on HBO Boxing After Darks, no slo-mo cam, so there is an open corner...

Yup, I can see how that would be interesting but I don't think it would work with the rings we get, but I'll certainly keep it in mind as the perspective is nice!

Excellent work. All the hype on SS with RB and his new Nikon was a bit much. For what it's worth, I like your coverage much better and think your color looks much more natural.

Fabulous shots.... inspiring!

Just checking - were you using a Pocket Wizard to fire the remote set-up... I cannot tell from the photo? (BTW, thanks for the photo of the set-up)

Tony,

Yes I was using a Pocket Wizard to fire the camera, in the set up shot for the corner remote it's taped to the back of the camera to cut the height. The set up above the ring is very similar, but the pocket wizard is in the hotshot, the camera hangs upside down, and there are a few more safety cables. If I have time in Quebec City next week I'll take a few shots of the setup there...

Many thanks - I have been using a Phottix remote with inconsistent results. I'll be upgrading to Pocket Wizards for some equestrian and motorsports stuff next year.
