I sometimes get this error for no apparent reason, I got all original Canon accesories and I have tried new battery, CF card, lens, etc. Remove and reinserted battery and nothing works. I sent it to Canon twice and they could not do anything about it, Please help!

That's amazing that Canon couldn't fix it. Is the problem consistent (making the camera totally unuseable) or is it intermittent. The error 99 is a catch-all error code and could mean really anything. I had it on my MKII on a recent outing. Taking the battery out and putting it back in remedied it and I continued to shoot without any further issues. Ensure that the lens mounts on both the camera and the lens are clean. You could try a reboot of the camera which is in your menu and shown as "reset all setting" or something very similar.

Does the error 99 happen everytime with everthing? Different lenses etc, even error 99 with no lens on the body?
If it does then I'd say that your shutter is probably now an ex-shutter and needs replacing.
Error 99 is a catch-all for 'nothing works' and is usually found when using faulty lenses where the diaphram won't stop down. Therefore if the body tells you error 99 everytime you press the shutter there is someting drasticly wrong somewhere.............sorry.
I'd be suprised if Canon can't diagnose the problem straight away - it is the occasional error 99 at random which is a real pain. Once it don't work at all it's easier to find the problem.

Tell us more.

What was the complaint or set of symptoms that you wrote down when you sent the camera to Canon repair? Then, what was Canon's response?

If Canon replied that they could not reproduce the symptoms, then that means that they actually tried to do something about it.

I had the same problem with my 10D. All my lenses worked on my 20D, so I was pretty sure they were not the problem. I cleaned the contacts but no luck. I then removed the CF, battery and the small memory button battery. I then turned on all switches and actuated the shutter button to discharge any residual voltage that may have been present. I left the camera in that state overnight. The next day I turned off all the switches and reinstalled the batteries. I turned on the camera and reset the time and date. After several hundred photos the dreaded error 99 has not raised its ugly head. Worked for me, maybe it will work for you.

Thank you Antoine, I will try that. Last night I could not get the camera to work at all, hopefully I will get lucky today, otherwise I will have to send it to Canon again.

I have tried all that SSIM, last night the camera did not work at all but if I send it for repair i am sure it will start working then. I will try it today after work and I am sure it will work for a while and then fail again. It is really a pain.

I have that "random" error 99. It does not happen only when the shutter button is pressed. It happens anytime, that is why i cannot pin-point the problem.

If you have ruled out lenses, and if you have ruled out the communications between the body and the lenses, then another common fault lies in the shutter assembly. I believe that it does not pose Err 99 until the moment that you actually push the button. It tries to click, but then it hangs and Err 99 comes up.

As far as I know, Canon is the only way to get that repaired, and the repair cost is less than replacing the entire camera.

I had the same error on my 300D when I used my old Sigma 70-300DL

Lens incompatibility apparently.

the 10D i bought, had the error 99, it did that with a 50mm f/1.8 lens but not with any other lenses, yet the 50mm f/1.8 lens worked on a 20D.................
is the firmware up to date. v/ 2.0.1?
