Been photgraphing a good many performances at a Charlotte, NC worship service for several weeks now called CharlotteONE. They had special guests Steve Fee (band is called Fee) and Charlie Hall, who are some Christian contemporary music ROCK STARS. Had pretty much unrestricted access, but I was a little shy. Guess I could have went right up front, but I stayed toward the sides.
Here's the set: http://epdixon.smugmug.com/Events/Steve-Fee-and-Charlie-Hall
Some of my favorites:

I think they get better as the posts go on. The first set i thought a lot of them were flat and could use some good contrast, as well as pretty noisy. What ISO were you using?

I think they got better as the performance went on too. There was a LOT of smoke from the foggers for the first half of the show, which is what caused the lack of contrast (I think). Messed with the coloring too, which is why I went with black and white on many.
I was at ISO 1600, and shot at f2.8 1/60 or so, but once again, I think the fog made the noise even worse for the first half. All these shots have been noise ninja-ed.

Try using your 50mm f1.4. This one is on my wishlist because you would be able to knock the iso way down or bump up the shutter speed. I think that could really help them a lot, and force you to get creative with angles.

I've used that lens with some success in the past at this same venue with the normal weekly band. It sucks in the light, no doubt, but nailing the focus at 1.4 is tough. Guess its a trade off.
Sometimes the graininess at the high ISO looks kinda cool to me if its black and white. Can get old quick though.

Some of these pics are much better than others...
There seems to be a lot of repetition of pics taken from the same angle... It's often better to post only the best ones... (besides, there is a limit of 8 pics at POTN)... The saying that "less is more" seems to apply here... Try and number them too, so we can give you feedback about the specific pic. Otherwise, there is potential for a pretty good set of eight here... Hope this info helps... Cheers.
BTW; give Dwight's suggested guidelines, Rules and Regs and answers to the most commonly asked questions a once over... (they are the stickies on top of this section's web page)... It will help you prepare your presentations for posting.

cool, i grew up with the base player and the drummer. The Charlie Hall is out of OKC along with my buddies, to bad i saw only 1 pick of quint - the bass player, and 0 of dustin - the drummer.

Thanks for the tips. As for shots from same angle, unfortunately the sides were the only areas I felt comfortable shooting from, and mostly stage left. I picked my favorites and posted em hoping for tips/c&c...not good at narrowing down. Def something I need to learn.

That's pretty awesome you grew up with them! I saw them do an acoustic set at a local church about 5 years ago and instantly was a fan. Both of those guys can seriously rock out. Charlie Hall does a great job leading, but the bass and drums make it out of this world. Personally, probably my favortie "popular" christian band.
Unfortunately you're right on not having many, if any pics of them. From the angle I was at, all I could really see was Charlie; speakers blocked the bassist and drummer. The one shot I have of the bass player was from inside the crowd at my seat, and you can see the speaker in the frame...
Need to be bolder and just go up front from now on. Guess I was a little shy and didn't really want to disturb people worshiping on the front rows by clicking away in front of them, although there wasn't anything officially stopping me...

I think these are pretty solid. Charlie Hall was always one of my favorite christian artists.
