Broke down today and ordered this lens.

Based on the extremely small depth of field, how many of you are hand holding this lens.

I shoot all my macro with flash, so this will help, but still a test to get sharp images I'm sure.

I wonder if it would be possible to modify a shoulder mount to a macro setup, would help with flying insects on flowers and add some stability.

Thanks for the feedback.

I think everyone hand holds this lens 90% of the time - it really isn't any harder than a normal lens in my opinion and easier than hand holding a 150/180 macro. The problem is the working distance but you will get used to that - maybe not the best for insects in flight!

true, but I think we all end up chasing some waiting for them to land.

at least I can hold off on getting a rail for a while.

I see you have a FF camera, that helps in that you can get larger insects all in frame - and the 5DMKII gives excellent crops for the smaller bugs. If you are keen on macro this will be your primary lens - in fact I haven't had any other lens on my 5DMKII - if only I was into landscapes......

the only problem is now that the lens is coming in, all the bugs are pretty much gone until april.

any tips on using the lens?

Thanks,

I have a tutorial section at Deviant Art (http://dalantech.deviantart.com/gallery/#Tutorials). I hand hold the lens for all of my photos.

Agreed we almost all handhold and use flash with this lens. Sometimes use a monopod to help with the weight and steady focus at high magnifications.

Moved your thread to macro talk which is the place for no photo sharing threads.
