Has anyone used a flash connected to the camera using a short pc cord and hand carried to create more dynamic light?

Yes. You can use the Canon off shoe cord 2 (or 3?) if you want to retain ETTL.

Has anyone done this at a wedding reception?

Its much easier to put it on a bracket, but sure. The biggest problem you have is holding the camera steady while you "aim" your flash at arms length. Agree with Tim, get a ocf cord so you can retain ettl, especially if you are at the ever changing conditions you encounter at a wedding reception.

When I said yes I meant some people do it - not me. I don't do it at all, it's awkward and means you only have one hand free for the camera.

How I photograph wedding receptions (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=646469). I also have an assistant and radio triggers so I have options.
