Can anybody give me some information or tips on a cropping problem I am having. I cannot seem to get the deminsions correct on my images when I want to enlarge or shrink them with cropping. I always seem to stretch the image where it doesn't look right. I am about to pull my hair out with this. Can someone please help me.

Cropping is cutting portions of the image off. It isn't really related to enlarging or shrinking.

If I used my 300D to take a picture of something, it comes out in 2x3 format. This would not print at 8x10. If you try and resize it to 8x10 you will distort the image. You have to get the shot in 4x5 (8/2 =4 10 /2 =5) format by either cropping (cutting some of the picture off) or adding a border around the photo to get to your required size.

There is a crop tool in photoshop that will let you specify the size you are trying to get to, the make a selection for the appropriate size. It's on the main tool bar, kind of looks like a square.

I am using PS7 for image processing. Thanks for the info. I have a 300D camera. Is there a way to set the camera settings to where the camera takes pictures in 8x10 format. Thanks

Hi,
No, the camera will take a photo that can be printed as an 8x12 or 4x6 without cropping. To get an 8x 10, you will have to crop off some of the shot. You can open a new document and paste your image in it. You will have a border on the long sides.

When you crop, are you putting the dimensions in the tool bar ie: 8 in x 10 in? If you do that, it should not change the perspective. If you are doing image resize it will change it unless you click on constrain properties. However, it will not let you chaqnge it to an 8x10, only an 8x12.

I hope I haven't confused you more.

pdrow explained it well....

If you want 8 x 10 inch crops for prints (say 300 ppi) you can go up to the option bar when you have the crop tool selected in Photoshop. Type in 8 in in the first field, 10 in in the second field and 300 in the third field. The crop tool will now crop to the right dimension, plus it lets you get it as the right ppi (pixles per inch) you want for the output (although 212 ppi or 250 ppi will look good too on photo paper, but then it will resize a bit).

If you want a portrait photo you just click the double-arrow button between the first and second field and the numbers switch places. You can also click the "delete"-button on the far right, if you dont' want those demensions anymore, and want a "free crop".
