Having just recieved this lens and knowing there are those out there on the fence about super wides I thought I'd give this lens a quick review.
First and foremost, zooming out to 12mm is very cool, I don't know how else to describe it. I guess its a personal taste thing, but this is my review so its officially cool.
Picture quality impresses me, and I'm not easily impressed. My first test shots were handheld, indoors, at low ISO. I shot it wide open (f/4) at 1/13 of a second and still managed to not have a blurry image from camera shake. I will test it more when it stops raining around here. Stupid mid-atlantic weather.
Build quality feels very sturdy, a little heavier than I expected but nothing I couldn't carry around for hours on end. It also comes with the hood, I didn't realize this and was pleasantly suprised.
There are 2 things I wasn't crazy about, first thing I noticed is the serial number on the lens is a sticker and mine was slightly peeling. I pushed it down with my finger tip and it seems to be sticking fine but will have to check back later. The second thing is that the red dot for lining up the lens to camera is on the inside of the metal mount and not on the outside of the lens. This means when the lens is touching the camera you can't see the red dot, didn't make it hard for me to get it on the camera but it seemed odd.
Overall I'm very happy I bought this, I can see myself getting many memorable photos from the lens and would gladly purchase it again. I will be sure to post more threads or update this one as I have more time to work with my new toy. For now there is my first test shot in the Still Life forum.
