I thought that I could get a bit of control of the DOF by using Av mode with my 580EX, but when I set it, even to something fairly wide open, the shutterspeed seems to get very long. Am I confused? Might I have something set incorrectly?

this is got to be one of the most frequently asked questions regarding flash. please check out the flash sticky. in short, the camera exposes for ambient light in the AV/TV/M modes so the presence of a flash does not affect the AE results.

It is exposing for the background and the flash will correctly expose the subject. I'm assuming that your using this indoors? Your not confused, It's tricky.

Use manual mode to set BOTH the aperture and shutter where you want them.. simple as that ;)

Hey, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one struggling with flash. And I've read almost all the sticky already. It just goes in one ear and out the other. Tonight I stick a pencil in one ear and try it again. Maybe I'll retain enough to get a decent flash picture.

Ya, well let me check what I think I know: if I used evaluative metering and program mode I get e-TTL ... and generally excellent images!? Now I will go read the sticky, sigh. :-)

I had same issue, the reason because E-TTL use slow sync in Av.Tv. M modes to proper expose background. so either use P or set everything manualy in M.
