I have recently found a set up of a Magician Flash Diffuser complete with colored filters and set of various reflectors (chrome, white, amber and green) for ten bucks at a garage sale. These were new in a package and never used.
This set is a Chinese knock-off of the Gary Fong Whale Tail Studio unit. I'll betcha that Gary's Whale Tail was also made in China. I would never have paid the over one hundred dollars for the Gary Fong setup, I decided that it would be worth ten bucks to play around with.
Although I really like the results from my Joe Demb Flash Diffuser Pro, the Magician/Whale Tail does seem to have some advantages. I like the fact that I can change the color of the flash with the filters and or reflectors and I also like the fact that the chrome reflectors will give me increased range (although, I imagine at a cost in softness).
I am considering taking this set up to China. It is a little bulky to pack but, I will probably put a pair of socks inside the sphere and send it on my checked-on airline baggage.
