So this is the ferris wheel based in 'Chavasse' park in Liverpool One. This one was taken by my wonderful girlfriend who is also new to the whole photography scene as am I.

I was impressed with this one.

C&C welcome! :)

I realise some of the lighgts on the tree are a lil OOF... What could be done to ensure all of the tree and the wheel were in focus? We used a high aperture for this which I thought would have helped... Maybe there was some movement of the tree in the wind?

Great shot. Well done to you both, and I hope you enjoy photography as much as most on POTN do!
As to the movement...I'd say it's due to camera shake.
Why do I think that? Because all the little lights on the tree are streaked in the same direction (lower right to upper left).
If it were the wind, maybe some would blur to the left, some to the right, etc.
So, to sort that out, you just need a more stable platform, such as a monopod, tripod (oh how I hate those!), gorillapod, bean-bag, back of a bench, wall......you get the idea!

Go to it, and hope to see more from you and your girlfriend.
:D

Oh, we did have a tripod.. Maybe we just nudged it by accident :( -- She wouldn't have been able to hold the camera that still for 10 seconds ;)

Thanks for the compliment though.. Maybe we should go another night and get a more sturdy shot.

Ya cheeky bugger! You'd just wrote that you'd used a "high aperture" - which I assumed meant a fast(ish) shutter speed....and since the EXIF data is hidden, I couldn't check!

Well, if you used a tripod, did you also use mirror lock-up and the self-timer? Those two little tricks would/should stop all camera shake - except for earthquakes, wind blowing the camera, or such like.

haha, sorry.. I was a lil vague on what we did.. I am right in assuming "High Aperture" is f19 or so?? Not sure exactly what it was but I know it was up towards the 20's because of the glare of the wheel.

Yes, we used the 2 second timer.. What's a mirror lock-up? Although my girlfriend has a habbit of standing basically on top of the tripod whenever she takes long exposure shots which makes me laugh everyime because it looks like she is 'protecting her patch'.

I'm guessing here, as I have a 30D, which isn't the same as yours, but it probably has mirror lock-up, too.
In the custom functions menu, you select "mirror lock-up" and when you press the button in "self-timer" mode, you can hear the mirror flap up, out of the way. This stops any risk of the mirror slapping away inside the camera and causing blur (as it has a nasty habit of doing). Then, the self-timer ticks away and simply activates the curtain - I think your camera has a mechanical one - which flicks up, allowing the sensor to do its job.
With my camera, the function is reset each shot, so that you can carry on as normal afterwards.
Have fun with it!

Aha! Thanks for the info, I will take a look for that in a mo! Still learning all of the functions and as you said earlier.. Lovin every minute of it.. Feel free to take a look at my flickr.. My girlfriend and I love experimenting with different forms of picutres :)

I soon want to go on to people picutres but just don't have a flashgun yet which I feel is somewhat limiting (if you don't have one) because of shadows :(

Most of us are still learning on POTN, so feel free to jump in, experiment, and ask for ideas on how to improve. It's one thing that makes us all, I think, enjoy coming here time after time....and as to your flickr, I really like the "View from the Cunard Building" shot, and "Kilmainham Gaol - HDR".
:D

And as to "needing a flashgun"? Not on your nelly, mate! Plenty of pro-level photographers have made good careers using natural lighting....though I can't think of any who don't own a flash or ten!

Thanks.. I had a quick look on my camera for the mirror lock.. Couldn't find anything specific.. Will try and google it.. Oh and I've just noticed I spelt Ferris wheel wrong in the title lololol

Edit: I checked and I got this info...

Drive modes Single
Continuous: 3.5 fps up to 53 JPEG / 6 RAW frames
Self-timer 10 secs (2 sec with mirror lock-up), Self-timer continuous

Good to hear you found mirror lock-up....especially as we're pondering on getting an XSi or Xti for our daughter's next camera, and I want it to have some functions similar to my 30D and the 7D, which is next on my shopping list!
Take care matey, and hope to spot more from you and yer good-lady soon!
