Just made the 20D purchase from B&H!!
I've been tooling around with a G5 for about a year now and have finally made the jump! So now I can finally move from the "G-series" on over to the EOS section of this forum!!
So are there any custom settings I should switch on as soon as I get the camera out of the box? Stuff like the noise reduction setting or the flash to fire after the exposure?!?
Now I just have to save up for a good lens and flash gun!

Re: the custom functions, it all depends on your shooting style and requirements from the camera.

Congrats :) Check out CF4-1, many people like it, I like it for some circumstances, and if you're gona use it it's best to use it right away.

Congratulations on the 20D.
I know that at first I was dissapointed by the softness of the 20D. Then I learned that by default it is soft and that it is expected that you will fix that in post processing. Since I bite at post processing (I use freeware Picasa 2 most of the time) I discovered that by setting the parameters to max sharpness and increasing the contrast in camera I was a much happier camper.

Thanks for the congrats my friends!
I can't wait to tear open that box tomorrow like a 10 year old on Christmas day!
lostdoggy that's a big jump! Are you looking to go pro?
Tim, I'll definitely hit up the manual for CF4-1!! I know you mentioned this before but can you refresh my memory on what the function does?
Skip Souza do you know if the 10D had this problem? Can it be over come with a good lens?

It's not a "problem", it's just a big difference between P&S and D-SLR cameras. Your 20D is not going to perform all of the image enhancements you're used to seeing straight out of the camera on your G5. BUT, with proper post processing, you'll come up with better images than you ever got with your G5. Yes, it takes a bit more time, but as someone who moved from a G5 to the Rebel XT, I can certainly tell you it's well worth it.

QuicK!!! Leave now before it's too late!! This forum is sure to ruin your financial standing with any major financial institution (not to mention your spouse!!)......and don't even start on 'L' lenses......there is a definite sickness around here. Just ask how many of us are 'Lcoholics'......:D
Just kidding of course. I moved from the infamous G1 to the DRebel and now have a 1D.....don't regret any of it for one minute. Enjoy your new camera!

Welcome on the darker side. Here is where all your very basic aggressive instincts will came out, every time you'll think that there is "something else" that you need for your DSLR. We will be glad to help you on this, by bringing to you attention those gadgets, accessories and lenses that you may have not yet found by yourself. Your wallet won't be happy, but sure enough you'll have a great time ! Congratulations.

But unfortunately I very rarely ever traveled out of the AV mode except certain low light conditions when I would use the TV mode at 1/40-1/60 handheld. So I don't have a lot (if any) experience with manual or custom setting modes. And I was going to be very content with going from the G5 to XT such as you did, but I plan on taking a lot of action shots (like hockey games) and thought I might need the extra FPS that the 20D can provide.

Perfect descriptions! But I should be ok.....I don't have much money to throw around and just getting the 20D has put me in a spot, so I doubt any "L's" in the near future! I'm just going to be so happy with all the stuff I can do with this camera that I couldn't even think possible with the G5!

That's exactly what I said a year ago when I got my Drebel for father's day!! Didn't even know what an L lens was and was quite content with the kit lens......until I started seeing shots taken with other lenses!!! You have been warned!!:D

oh no!
I am still puttering around with a G3 and an old Canon Rebel film camera. I have been reading some of these posts and I still don't know what an L lens is!

I had a G5 and a mighty fine camera it was. I was sad to see it go, but began to realise that there were cameras that could help reduce the annoyance I felt with some aspects of it's performance.
I bought a second hand 10s from a friend and had mixed fortunes.
I was offered several very old lenses and found this forum and others and bought my own. It was an 85mm 1.8 prime which didn't really improve the low light performance (since the G5 was something like f2).
I was able to increase the ISO which helped, but shooting raw and buying top quality lenses has remarkably increased the quality attainable.
If you get off on quality, then the slr route is the way to go. If you just want better than average snaps, then grab the G6 or equivalent.
It's expensive, but if you are prepared to pay for quality, you will not be disappointed.

There is an article in the latest Popular Photography that addresses this very topic. My favorite from this article was to set the camera so it would only fire if the compact flash card was on board.

Oh, and I did enter a couple of entries in that Challenge! But got shot down both times! LOL! But I have seen you win it a few times with some very nice shots! And as a matter of fact, all the pictures in my 'signature' link were taken with the G5.

-KKI saw that very article the night I got my 20D!! And YES that is a handy little function isn't it! I've done that with film before, so this would definitely aid in not taking some outstanding pictures..........without the CF card in!! lol

Feihung .... welcome aboard!!!
Don't regret that you are selling your G5 now ... I haven't touched my G2 much since I got my 20D (and I truly loved it :o )
But now, it's the rationalization ... well, if the occasion is worth to take a camera, then it is also worth to take THE BIG CAMERA ...
So my G2 is relegated to green box work for my wife.
Best regards,
Andy

Actually, I am the other way around. I can in no way afford the nicer L lenses, so I have found ways of getting images taken with my cheaper lenses to look great instead...
Here are some examples... Two of them were taken with a $150 lens, the cycle one was taken with the kit lens.
As you can see, plenty sharp, and alot of detail for the price of the lens.
