I am still trying to decide which lens to buy, either the Tamron SP AF28-75/2.8XR Di IF or the Canon EF-S 17-85 IS. Sharpness is very important for me. I heard that the Tamron is very sharp almost L quality but the Canon has a better wide. Any suggestions?

Dont have either of these lenses. I do know that people RAVE about the tamron on this forum and that it is cheaper than the 17-85 IS, which is EF-S format I beleive.
EF-S is fine for the 20D but not if you were going to upgrade to a FF sensor.

Any particular reason against the Tamron? Which lens/es do you suggest?

Excellent lens. I'm an owner of this lens and I love it.
Extremely hard to find though... :o

Definitely the Tamron, I don't buy lenses slower than F2.8 any more. btw Dante seemed to be recommending the Tamron, not saying anything against it which is what it looks like you think he said (hope that makes sense).

My wife has the Tamron and uses it about 85% of the time. There is no getting that thing away from her. Probably the "closest to L" non Canon lens around. I know that hers is so sharp you can cut yourself looking at it.

To put matters straight, the 17-85 IS is more expensive than the Tamron 28-75/2.8 AND EF-S 18-55 combined :D
If you go for that alternative (I did), you have
+ wide angle coverage with the same image quality as the 17-85 from 18-28 mm focal range
+ far better image quality and f/2.8 in the 28-75 focal range
- You lose IS, the convenience of not having to swap lenses and the focal range of 75-85 mm
(which is not much of an issue if you plan to get a 70-200 lens, as well).
- Aaah yes, it is not a CANON lens ... so you might feel you are missing something if you are a brand junkie
Best regards,
Andy
