Asked a popular Canon reseller why this lens is out with no delivery date in site. This sometimes happens when they have a replacement coming. Does it make any sense that this lens is next for an upgrade? Or has it's popularity caused a run on the market? There are plenty of 50mm 1.4's available?!?
Oh yeah, by the way, when they say we have one in stock and you know one of the most popular reseller's don't, be careful.

Glad I just picked up a used one then, so far it seems like a Dandy lens.

Please note the keyword "rumor" in the title. That being said, I think I am going to make due with the lenses I have and see what Bob Atkins Photo says in the next month. I may have to wait that long to get one from my favorite source anyway.

 Seems I remember a thread about the 17-40L being discontinued a while back, also the 70-200 f/4L. The usual reason for these shortages is that Canon can't run a supply chain to save themselves.

I am sure in this 'just in time' manufacturing culture, huge stock piling of any item is on the decrease. This way they assess demand and pre-book a production run based on sales immediately preceeding the shortage.
Digital photography has certainly made a significant impact on photography and forums like this help to make particular lenses fashionable.
The 85mm 1.8 is indeed a great lens. It was my first and still one of my favourites for portraits.

Just went to the local mark up store to see the lens. Wow!! I love it. Small, light, good build, focal length seems like it is great for head and sholder portraits and would be nice for indoor school and sports activities. Almost as small as the 50mm. Pictures seem razor sharp, but of course I didn't move anything to PS. Now I really want one.

Don't push the fates!! Curious, why did you let it go? Seems like something you would hold on to.

Well, two answers to this one. Since I got my 1D I have found that many lenses that I used a lot with my DRebel and it's 1.6 crop factor just were not used that much anymore. The 85 is a great lens and takes impressive shots but I just have not used it as much as my other longer focal lengths in the past while. If I really miss this focal length, I think I will bite the bullet later this year and get the 1.2 L version. Secondly, I have a 35F1.4 L coming soon and I needed the room in the bag!!

Yes, the 135mm provides great reach especially at 1.6 crop. Thats why I liked my 28-135 IS.
Your 35mm 1.4 L will be great for candids. I feel a little too wide for candids with 8.3mp though. 16mp would be better. Think you need to buy that camera while you're at it.

I just got mine a few weeks ago... ordered from B&H. Web said out of stock, so I chose email me when in stock. The next day, I got the "not in stock yet, but taking orders". The following day, they were in stock. LOVE the lens though... putting it to a dance recital test in 2 weeks!

I find it odd that they could replace this model. It's allmost perfect as-is.
It's unbelievably sharp, well built and has the best USM focus motor.
Maybe they could improve the digital performance ever so slightly?

Hard to beleive, especialy since they already have the f1.2 alternative!
I received my brand new 85mm f1.8 yesterday, so someone, somewhere, must have them :D (got it in UK from 7dayshop, FYI)

The 85mm f/1.8 is the best lens purchase I've ever made. I love the low-light capability in the longer lens.
One of the days, I might make the jump to the f/1.2, but that's one helluva' jump, so I want to be sure that the benefits of making it warrant making it...

I doubt the 85/1.8 is being discontinued. I had a hard time getting one about 6 months ago, and I seem to remember the same rumor going around.
Just curious, but what was the last discontinued lens? Was it the 200/1.8L?

I took this shot on Friday.
Doyle Dykes was doing a guitar clinic at a local store here in San Diego. It was a very low light situation, but I'm happy with the result:

I wasn't real close to the stage, but I wasn't in the parking lot, either.
You know, if anything were to ever happen to my lenses, I think I would reevaluate whether to just replace them, or get something a bit different (50mm f/1.4 instead of the 1.8, or maybe a 17-40mmL instead of my 20-35mm).
This lens, however, would be replaced in a New York minute...
