Finally found a bowl good enough to try this with.
My DIY beauty dish.
$9.99 bowl from TJ Maxx, $4 for bolts and nuts from home depot, $3 for mirror at Wal-Mart, $4 for black/white spray paint.

Test shot with it. About 3' from subject right and to camera right. Little hot on the left side of her face but I still like it. It's my mom :)
AB800 lowest power setting. F/4 - 1/200 - ISO200

Before I bought the AB BD, I was thinking of doing this but using a parabolic heater's dish instead. I guess a DIY does give good results depending on the shape of the bowl used.
Is the bowl you're using ceramic? How heavy is it?

I think it's paper machete or something. It's actually pretty light. The light holds it no problem.

Oh okay. I thought it was a ceramic bowl. Haha.
As for machete... that's dangerous. I think you mean paper mache?

I think it would have been nicer if you used one of those large, round tubs? Like where my wife marinades steak. Lol. I bought the AB BD because I was after the specific design and the sock.

It´s allways nice to see that people still have the effort to do stuff by themselves. I´m just too lacy to do anything beforehand. I have bought the Elinchrom Beuty Dish for 250€ (times 1.4 in US). Of course during the shoot I have to be creative and use the materials at hand but between commissions I never seem to prep stuff like that altough I think I should.

I love DIY projects like these! It really makes me think twice about buying the real thing when such alternatives are available!

I would like to see how the flash is secured to the bowl.
